Hello All,
I am interested in buying Canon 70-200 F4 L non IS.
I saw the lens today and tried a few test shots. Finally saw the quality in the L glass!
I will be using it with my 40D.
The date code is U making it 2006.
Looking to buy it off a amateur photographer, Condition is fair and there is regular usage marks on the hood. comes with box and pouch.
He is offering it for £400 and would not come down on the price.
1) Is it reasonable and worth the money?
2) is it worth spending extra and buying it new (warranty purposes)

Your help would be highly appreciated.
Cheers,
Raj.

I bought a new one 6 months age and the code was U, as long as it works as expected and you are happy with the condition I would say yes as they are £550 in Warehouse Express now, Kerso will be a lot cheaper normally so may be worth sending him a PM to ask what he charges at the moment ;) Great lens BTW ;)

A date code of UU gives a 2006 build date. I would say £380 + seems to be around the price they are fetching at the moment, depending on condition etc. Usual scuffs to hood are nothing to worry as long as no cracks etc. The main area is the optics and movement of the controls, if you have seen the lens, you'll know if they are perfect.

Yep about what the secondhand market price is at the moment for the 70-200mm f4.... <kerso1123@msn.com> is pricing them at £465 new, that was from a canon list he sent me on the 11 July 09.

How about a Sigma 70-200 f2.8?

i recently got a 2008 mint one off ebay for £375 inc P&P and a tripod collar ( a must have in my opinion), well pleased with it so far.

interestingly, i did a comparison test with a sigma 70-300 apo and found the canon lens to be a little sharper but not by much. focus speed and control of purple fringing was MUCH better than the sigma and miles better than a tamron 70-300.

Sold my 10 month old 70-200 a month or so ago on here for £380 and I delivered it :P

I value L glass at 80% of new value. New value to me is what Kerso sells them for :P

Got mine, it's fantastic :D

AF is nearly instant, near enough silent to focus and sharp wide open.

First shot with it, fairly heavy crop and shot at f/4.

Wow, i have a february 2008 lens (70-200f4L), and i only paid £300 for it last year brand new..

Shows how much the prices have risen!

But £400 atm seems about right. But anything between £375 and £425 is about right, depending on how much you barter ;)

funny and upsetting at the same time, i was going to buy one when they had cashback on them, i think it was around £339 with the cash back on it... im so upset i didnt go for it then :(
