Hey peeps been offered a sigma 120-400mm OS as trade for my canon 70-200mm F4 L, Do you guys think it would be a worthy trade or am i better holding onto my canon, ive heard good and bad things about the sigma, most saying that it tends to be quite soft.....

It depends on what you need it for - the 120-400 has more reach, but also starts long - so it's main failing IMO is that it's best suited to distant and more distant things.

70-200 hasn't got the length, but is a useful tool for general walkabout reach - good for everyday zooming.

I have both of these lenses and would not be without either. I like the 70-200 as it's small and light and more comfortable to shoot in the 120-200 range than the sigma. IQ is great.

The Sigma offers greater reach, has good OS and also has very good IQ (I've not encounted any question of softness on it) - the main drawbacks is size and weight.

It's hard to give an opinion as the lenses are entirely different focal lengths and therefore difficult to compare.

I would not replace a 70-200 with a 120-400. I would have both! They do 2 different jobs really!

How about a Canon 1.4x extender or the 2.x is you can live without autofocus.
You'll lose one stop with a converter so f/5.6 @ 340mm or 400mm.

Both lenses retail in a similar price range with the canon @ £500 and the sigma @ £590, but the difference is the canon would hold it price relatively well, where as the sigma would lose more on the 2nd hand price.

As comment above suggest, it depends what you want and whether they're asking any more $$$$$....for the sigma. The canon is by far the better lens, but it all depends what you want... Stewart on lensesforhire doesn't like them as he (or maybe his US counterparts, can't remember which) had quality problems with that particular lens.

The 2x converter makes this lens almost worthless.
