How good is this lens?

Watched a good few end on ebay for £300 recently and for an L tele lens this seems a bargain!?!

Got a few bits here to get rid of and wondered if it was worth picking one up.

Im looking for a portrait lens anyway and a few people have said they use the 70-200

But is the F4 non IS any good? dnt want to pay double just to have IS or even more for the 2.8 but if the F4 is better off staying where it is and me saving my cash ill do that :)
 
I have one & they are brilliant,if you use it for portraits & flash or other lighting i dont see F4 being a problem,i think you will shoot above that anyway.:):thumbs:

Same here. IS isnt a problem as long as you keep the shutter speed up. I have a 1x4 extender on it as well and its great for outdoor wildlife also:thumbs:
 
I just bought one recently off ebay and it's a fantastic lens. Very sharp and I don't find the lack of IS noticeable. As been said, keep the shutter speed high and it's not too much of a problem, particularly at the 70mm end. Haven't put it to extensive use but the initial feelings are very positive.

The only thing I'd add is that it's a fairly heavy lens and quite unbalanced handheld so if you're gonna use the wide end mainly you might be better off getting a prime like a 85mm 1.8.
 
Would you guys rather have a 70-200 or save for the 100-400?

Mainly for wildlife and sports etc.
 
for sports and wildlife .. i guess youd rather the 100-400? but thats just assumption .. i will shoot very little if any of either so think the 200 is my best option ..
 
sounds like you need the 100-400 (if you plan on staying with tography for a while )although depends on what sports are you doing.

£300 is a pretty good deal. I'd snap one up at that price if I didn't already have one.

just had a look on the completed listings and there was a mint 70-200 f4 is locla to me that sold for 395-00 buy it now BARGAIN
 
I've got the 2.8 non IS, it's rather heavy! Although I saw a 4 and 2.8 side by side at jessops really and the 4 is loads smaller, can't really tell on pictures but it's quite a difference, so it's probably not too heavy.

For £300 you can't go wrong, although I'm finding there's not a lot of situations you can use it in apart from sport, wedding and street photography. Too short for wildlife and, in my opinion, too long for portraiture. Might as well use a prime if you're using the 70mm end and you'd need a HUGE room to use the 200 end..

I ended trading up for the IS version....so you may want to consider a little bit of saving and just buying once...

For me I did nt like having to bump the ISO on cloudy days to get the shutter speed to stop a bit of blur creeping in - for portraits and landscapes which is what I use mine mostly for the IS is GREAT!
 
This is a lens I have been planning on getting, and with the rest of the thread thought I had decided - but then you had to post that Jeff... :thinking:

Tried the /4 non IS on the 1Ds in Jessops and it really is light and quite small. The camera body was still clearly the heaviest part.
 
Yeah, the 1Ds is pretty big though I imagine?
The heavy 2.8 on a 500D is a pretty awkward hold, better on a tripod though.
 
The non IS 70-200mm F4 is reported to be one of Canon's sharpest zoom lenses - and that is pretty good going. While I had the non IS version I found no difficulty hand holding at lower shutter speeds - even down to 1/60th (Although that took a bit of practise)
 
£300 is defo the limit for me as i have seen many sell on ebay for that figure!

the IS one at £395 was a steal!

defo going to look for one i think ..

Like Jeff, I too had the non-IS version but traded up to the IS version - in good daylight it's on par with the best of Canon's lenses - superb lens! I used it for a bit of wildlife (i.e. birds in my garden) motorsport and portrait.

I was lucky in that I bought and sold my non-IS for the same price (£375) (bought Mar this year - sold Nov), so 8 months of ownership didn't cost me anything, as such. Even if you can't do the same, if budget is limited, you may still be best getting the non-IS and seeing how you get along with it - you shouldn't lose much (if anything) on it if you buy well enough in the first place.

I also have the 100-400L and to be honest they're totally different lenses. The 70-200 f/4 (IS or non-IS) is lightweight and really easy to use - I find the 100-400L a bit harder to get on with, mainly down to weight and balance, although it's still a real corker of a lens. The 70-200 is definitely the sharper of the 2, but unless you're pixel peeping, you're not really going notice a huge difference between the two, assuming the shot is well taken in the first place!

Either way, you'll be pleased with your choice.

you could be waiting a long long time to find an IS version for £400 - I paid £650 for mine and think that it was well bought (it was only 4 months old when I bought it)

the one on eBay looks like a one off/exception to the rule - you'd be lucky to pick up a fairly old f/4 IS for under £600 normally
 
i emailed the 400-00 one on ebay and the guy said it sold within 3 minutes of it being listed funnily enough
 
the f4 non IS is a superb bit of kit. will be advertising mine in here soon as cash strapped, will be so sad to see it go as the results are amazing.

they are bought to be resold.

I had 2 items recently bought by the same person with 2 different accounts within seconds of listing.

the selling account is pretty known, it's - alldigital089 or something :lol:
 
It's annoying for the bargain hunter if companies are buying just to sell for a bigger profit :(
