Thinking about buying one of these to use at pony shows that I'm going to start attending with my niece. I'm a little concerned about the non is though. How good are these lenses and are they any good being used hand held?

Always use mine hand held. Just up the shutter speed. Fantastic lens & razor sharp.

Agree, excellent lens, just sold mine though after 6 yrs. Just bought 70-200 f2.8 mk II :)

Ad a try today on a 5dmkII and I was amazed how sharp it was, 1/250 and above and you will be fine. And it's so cheap at jessops

Hi,

Agree with the other comments, since you are shooting 'action' you'd be using a decent shutter speed so IS wouldn't make a difference. I'd suspect you'll be 1/500 or more ??

Cheers,

Kenny

PS I have a 70-200L f4, really happy with it, really crisp contrasts images

Have to aggree, this is the best value for money lens, even without IS this lens focuses really fast, here are some examples, It manages to keep up with our puppy:

and here is me jumping, my mother took it so unfortunatly its focused on the trees behind but I'm not too oof :

both of these taken at 1/1000 of a second, best to set it on Tv and auto iso and concentrate on composition

I bought mine from amazon, its still cheaper than jessops and as long as you buy from actual amazon then your guaranteed a uk version

I've had one and it was an excellent lens, very pleased with it. The IS is great to have, but it isn't essential and then there is the cost - I don't think you'd be disappointed with it.
