Canon 70-200 f4L (non IS) advice reqd!

So, following on from a trade I have just done I will soon be the proud owner of my first L lens! I am looking to use the 70-200 f4L (non IS) with my 40D and would love any advice experience etc. on how to get the best from it!

I understand its not ideal for low light unless on a tripod with long exposure due to being f4 but any input would be gratefully received!
 
I have that and have used it on the 30D and 60D. It's very nice. I was so chuffed with it when I got it last Christmas :) It makes you realise what you've been missing, using cheaper lenses, even the best cheaper lenses! It's so smooth and quiet compared to say, my Sigma 105 (okay totally different lens type, but it's just a noise comparison). The colours are so nice using it, you'll be instantly pleased.

Also it isn't actually bad in lower light. I expected it to be a lot worse, based on my experience with the crappy Sigma 70-300 I had.

I'd buy the tripod ring (you can get knock-off's cheap from eBay) and use it with a monopod outdoors for stability. They are lovely lenses, just watch the shutter speed in lower light. I'd aim for 1/500s or more @ 200mm on a 40D

Thanks Phil, had seen them on EBay and wondered about those. Good advice re shutter speed too!
 
Awesome lens, you are going to have some fun.

As previously noted this lens is not that bad in low light, you just need to work on technique. i very rarely use a tripod with it but have been known to use various props to rest on. Maybe a light monopod could be the way to go.

It always depends on what you are intending to shoot but this lens is great for many subjects.
