I recently purchased a 70-200 f4 and am now after a tripod ring for it. Have been trawling the internet and appreciate that there all pretty much after market (unless you want to pay silly money) and although may carry the 'canon' mark there made by someone else. So my question is have you got any suggestions on what to go for and from where. Or is it just a case of ' I'll have that one '.
 
I don't think there are any easy answers here. It's not like buying a battery grip where some of the non-OEM ones have good brand names. When it comes to tripod rings, the Canon ones are very good but very expensive, and all the rest are unbranded so it's virtually impossible to know what you're getting unless you can handle one first (which is unlikely).

And it's probably not until you've seen a bad one that you realise how good the Canon ones are. Smooth fitting, smooth rotation, quality paint finish, secure tightening knob, etc - things you could easily take for granted. So it's probably worth bearing in mind that, to a certain extent at least, you get what you pay for, and it's probably a good idea not to buy *too* cheap.
 
I bought a cheapish one from Ebay - circa £ 10

It wasn't a particularly good fit until I ran a ring of black electrical insulation tape around the lens.

Whilst it now a better fit it still has a tendency to slacken itself off

However, with the benefit of hindsight, I'd probably still buy the Ebay cheap one as a genuine Canon on is about 9 times the cost. I notice there are some in the £ 30 area on Ebay, but I think I'd want to try one first or have number of positive reviews, in case they're the same as the cheap ones from Ebay in a posher box.

A secondhand genuine one sensibly priced would be a good option.
 
Thanks for the info guys. Im kinda with andrew on this one, iv noticed the slightly more expensive ones but you will never know if there just the same as the £10 one.
Why oh why are the canon one's so expensive, I mean nearly £100!! Ouch

I too just couldn't bring myself to pay £140 for a genuine Canon one, so first I bought a cheapy that wouldn't rotate properly and scratched the lens. Then I got another one that turned out to be plastic and totally useless. Recently spotted the Fotodiox, and clues to better quality are the higher price for a start, then the steel insert in the foot, and though you can't see it in that link, the locking mech is brass with a spring-loaded safety catch. Works a treat, thoroughly recommended :thumbs:
 
Well I ordered one from ebay and should receive it today, it cost me £15 so I haven't gone to cheap as I see you can pic them up for like £4! I will see what it is like but to be honest I will keep the amazon one in mind as considering it will be supporting my lens and camera i need a bit of trust in it.

I have an old 300 f4 L that came with a Canon mount which I put on my new 70-200 f4L, needing something for the 300 I took a punt on the cheapy, not bad at all, all metal, the only difference to the Canon one is the locking mechanism, just a threaded bolt on the cheapy, this could possibly wear out if you were frequently removing it, as it will stay on the lens I see no problem and it fits well and holds the lens as well as the Canon mount, just going by the pictures this is the same cheap mount as the ones that go on Ebay for a tenner.
