Canon 70-200 used, focus scale not always moving

Ok guys, I bought a used 70-200 f4 IS this afternoon from a local camera shop. Took it down the park to test it out and noticed that the focus scale won't always move when manually focusing. It will move when you tilt the lens either up or down, but not really move that much when horizontal.
I also noticed that if you were at infinity, pointed the lens at an upward angle and fries to auto focus, the lens would take an age to attain focus, if it moved at all.
Rang the shop who have offered to send it away to Canon, or have a refund....

What would you do, it's a UZ date code, I just don't know if I could have faith in it after repair.....
 
Think I'd be opting for a refund if your not confident about the lens -wonder if its been dropped ?

Having said that, if they're sending it to Canon, it should come back like new and would have a warranty - I suppose another thought, how much did you pay for the lens and could you purchase another of similar age etc for the same ?
 
It was £695, enough really, but it is mint and boxed. Will ask if it will have a warranty from Canon, that will be the decider I think....

Definitely would be the decider for me - I'd also be making sure that the camera shop are paying for all the cost of the repair - even if Canon come back and say its due to accidental damage - been dropped / knocked etc ...

Make sure the camera shop is sending it to Canon (or authorised repair centre) and not a local repair place...

Might be worth a call to Canon @ Elstree tomorrow morning to see what warranty they offer with a repair like this.
 
I think ill get a refund, and then go for a 100-400 IS for the sake of another £300 odd
 
has it got the motor inbulit? i think it might do, and the focusing has like a clutch system, so moving it will only move the focus ring if you already at closest or furthist focus, theres no hard stop.

maybe its that?
