Canon 70-200 Weatherproofing

No idea about the weatherproofing on the f4 (though FYI I've never had a problem with the 2.8 IS version on a 1D). But if I was planning for wet weather, as opposed to be being caught out by rain, I'd recommend a weatherproof housing. Even just a cheapo plastic bag and elastic bands combo. Takes the doubt out of your mind, gives the weatherproofing on the camera a helping hand and you can put your gear in your bag at the end of the day nice and clean.

I believe only the IS versions are weatherproofed?

Chris

Edit: (or it may only be both the f/2.8 ones, I know of the 4 variants, 2 are weatherproofed and 2 aren't)

Is the 70-200 F4 L weatherproofed?

As well as landscapes I like to shoot motorsport (Le Mans, Rally GB etc) and am concerned about getting my 450d and lenses wet so am wondering about chopping the lot in against a 1D Mk2 and a 70-200, probably an F4L although I would love a 2.8

The 70-200mm f4 isn't weather sealed. Save your self some money and buy a lens/camera cover, check below, it'll keep most things dry. These are well recommended, I've used them all day in the rain. The 70-200mm f4 IS is weather sealed, but you need the 1D series to really achieve the full benefits of weather sealing.

I've used my 1D MkIII and 70-200 IS f/2.8 in monsoon like conditions. They both perform flawlessly, as expected but you find yourself constantly wiping them down with a chamois leather as they become slippery. I'd recommend prevention, rather than cure by using a plastic bag and rubber bands as described above.

I've got the 70-200 f2.8 and it got a thorough soaking at an air show last month, was ****ing it down attached to my 5DmkII which also recieved the same showering treatment :).
