Canon 70-200f4 or sigma 70-200f2.8

As per title, both lenses seem to go for about the same price s/h, would I find the canon much better quality?
I owned a canon 70-200f2.8 many years ago but funds will not allow getting one of those again at the moment.

can i just chuck a vote for the Tamron in the mix here. It is 70-200 and 2.8 and 5 year warranty, comes with the tripod collar included and pretty cheap!

I have never found any problem with the autofocus on my copy (i use the centre spot and recompose always) and damn it is sharp on a crop body, even wide open at 200mm it is damn sharp!

I can vouch for the Sigma 70-200 2.8 EX HSM II. Great lens, lovely IQ, sharp quick to focus, great colour rendition and built like a tank. I use it at indoor showjumping at f2.8 and it performs perfectly.

Its as good as the Canon IMO and give you the extra stop of light.

Not used the Tamron but I do see Jessops have 40% off Tamron lenses at the moment!

Had a look at jessops, could not find a discount.

IMO the Sigma f2.8 lens would be the one I would go for. The extra stop makes all the difference in low light conditions.
 
Here's a curve ball for yer.......Sigma 50-150mm f2.8 EX DC HSM + 1.4x TC to give a 50-210mm f2.8-4 combo. very light and compact (internal zoom and focus). This is what I find myself using more and more, in fact I just sold my Bigma and my 100-300mm f4 EX is in danger......
 
Never owned either of those lenses, but I think that Canon lens would have a beter resale value, just in case you'll decide to upgrade.

It was on their web site when I posted it, but you're right, now its gone!
 
They say the 70-200 f/4 is one of the most sharpest lenses canon make. I would choose the canon IQ should be better and it will be a lot lighter
