Canon 70-200L Is or no IS?

Hi

Okay, I generally wish to shoot some wildlife and running events. Should I stump up the extra for the IS version of the 70-200 or just go vanilla on this and save myself a packet?

Can you afford it how much will you miss the money for the is is there any other kit you are looking at getting as well?
 
I am looking at a wide-angle for Barcelona as well but that is not a necessity.

Will I benefit from IS in action shots or wildlife?
 
Re the 24-200mm are you thinking about the f4 or f2.8? And what camera will the WA bolt onto?

Sorry, it is the f4 and it is on to a 500D.

I am tempted at ignoring the IS and just going for the sub £500 70-200mm but I can stretch a little.
 
Ignore the IS itself for a second and work out your budget. The IS version has much better optics and until the 2.8 mkII came along was probably the best Canon fit lens in this class.

If you can afford the more expensive version then go for it irrespective of whether you'll have the stabilisation turned on or not.
 
Would you miss IS if you went for the standard version. I think you would always wish you had it when you got a few blurry shots that you can't take again.

However the 500D doesn't have the gasket on the lens month that interfaces with the seal on the lens, AFAIK it's only the 1D series that have that.

Personally I don't think IS is needed for action or wildlife, but if the optics are better the IS version may be a better bet.
