Canon 70-200mm f2.8 with 2x extender?

Hi all,

About to buy a Canon 70-200mm f2.8 lens, and I'm considering getting a 2x extender for those occasions when I need a longer reach. Has anyone used a 2x extender on the f2.8? Would appreciate any views as to how soft it makes the images or whether they are still good quality.

That's what i use and have no problems, my extender is the MKiii version

Example 70-200 at 400mm f5.6 with the x2 extender

Thanks, the 70-200 2.8 IS II is without doubt my favourite lens, heavy but i love it
 
I used one on my 70-200 2.8 mrkII. It's just my opinion but I did not care for it. I'm use to the sharp wow factor shots I get with this lens and with the ext I didn't see that. Don't get me wrong, the pics are okay but it takes away from the image quality. For what it's worth my friend try it as well and he felt the same way as I did.

I think the OP is talking about the mk1 lens, which doesn't pair well with extenders

the mk2 does pair well but i'd avoid extenders with the mk1, even a 1.4 wasn't good!
 
I've had both the MkI and MkII 70-200 f2.8L IS and have to agree with mrjames above. I bought a 2x MkIII extender as I'd read reviews saying the lenses were better with the MkIII and whilst I got some great shots with the MkI lens there wasn't that many, even when stopped down a bit. The MkII lens is a whole different thing altogether, I use the combo quite often on my 70D and I've got plenty of good shots from it already. It's good at f5.6 but even better at f8, I'll post a photo of a bird I took at f8 later as my Flickr is playing up at the minute but the shot is a jpeg SOOC with no sharpening and the detail is pretty good.

Finally got home and got Flickr working properly so here's the bird pic I was on about above.
