Canon 70-200mm F4 and Extenders

Thinking of getting a 70-200 F4 L IS has any of you got any experience with this and canon 1.4 x extender, does the AF work Ok.

Am I right in thinking I would lose AF with a 2 x extender

I know the extenders are now mark III so wondered if there is and improvments with AF on the new versions.

Yes, Yes if you use anything other than a 1 series body and No, exactly the same if you mean losing AF above f/5.6

Go for it, got that combo myself although must say rarely use the extender and if it had been available then might have gone for the new'ish 70mm-300mm L IS
 
Now you've trown a spanner in the works a 70-300 L IS is cheaper than buying the 70-200 + extender, Hmmmm

What are the thoughts on that.
 
Guess it depends how much you think you will need the longer range, both lenses are supposed to be excellent, can only comment personally on the 70-200

Not sure at what length the 70-300 changes from f/4 to f/5.6 (bet its not 200mm though) and it can't take a TC, doesn't physically fit I understand

Thinking about it again perhaps I wouldn't change, didn't realise the front portion extended on the 70-300 and its no doubt heavier too

Just comes down to choice given both are very good lenses, perhaps wait to get the TC, might not find you are wanting the extra reach

This is a really tricky one.

I went from a 70-300 4-5.6 USM to a 70-200 4 IS L and 1.4 extender BEFORE the 70-300 L was announced.

Now the 70-200L is fantastic, with the 1.4X it's OK (not quite so Ok now on my 7D I must admit) but I think if the 70-300L had been about I would have bought that instead.

You need to look very carefully at how often you are likely to max out the 70-200 and wish you had the extender on. I find it a bit of a faff to stop and change to using the extender, and then it's always the next shot you need to take it off again :bonk:

I also think that the way modern high MP DSLR's murder any images where the technique/conditions are not spot on that there is a lot of scope with the 70-300 for dissapointing images. Don't forget 300mm on a 1.6 crop is almost 500mm in old money.

Go and have a look at the 70-300L it's a beautiful lens, and not as big as you might think, it's also had lots of glowing reports.

I just need to summon up the courage to sell my 70-200 and 1.4x and buy the 70-300L :D.

I've just ordered a Kenko 1.4x DGX converter because it is compatable with most of my lenses unlike the Canon extender which has limited compatability. I've been told it will even autofocus on my 100-400 L at f5.6 , though whether it will remains to be seen.
