I'm seriously thinking of getting the non-IS Canon 70-200mm f4 lens, but am concerned that the IS is really needed for hand-held shooting. I begrudge spending twice as much for the IS version (and can't afford to anyway) especially when some lower grade Canon lenses include IS for free. Can anyone reassure me that IS isn't abslutely necessary. Many thanks.

I had the F4 non IS and only on occasions where I was at the greater focal length and the light was such I couldn't get a fast enough shutter, did I miss the IS.

I used mine a lot for motorsport and never really had an issue, having said that, if you can save a few hundred pounds more, then I would go for the IS version, so you have it if / when required.

You could pick up the non IS version and if you found that you were missing the IS, you would be able to sell on the non IS for only a small loss as they do hold on to their price well.

If you are thinking of getting the IS you may want to think about a F2.8 non IS. I recently got mine for less than a F4 IS and I have not missed the IS on the occations I used it. My be worth thinking about or not as the case may be.
