Canon 70-300 L IS USM, a concern!

Thinking about maybe getting the Canon 70-300 L f/4-5.6 IS USM.

However, having done a bit of research, I found a statement on the Canon UK web-site, that concerns me.

It said:

"Lenses with dust/moisture resistance are fitted with a rubber ring on the lens mount which may cause slight abrasion of the camera mount. This in no way affects either the lens or camera performance."

Having just bought a nice new 5D Mklll, I'm obviously not keen on the idea of abrading the mount facing.

I have to wonder what they actually means by abrasion, as to me its means to score or scratch.

Are Canon inferring that it would leave a black rubber mark, which is somewhat different to an abrasion.

Do any of you guys have a dust and moisture sealed telephoto L lens, and if so, is there an abrasion problem, as Canon suggest?

I think you are right Andy.

I have the 24-105L, and just had a look, and yes it does have a rubber sealing ring.

Never noticed that before (lol)

P.S. Just been back to the Canon website, and they don't give the same warning notice, for the 24-105L, and yet it has the rubber sealing ring. Ah well, no to worry.

I have the 70-300L and it has the rubber weatherproof sealing ring but there's no way i could see it marking the camera body or mount its too soft a rubber to do so.
Its a great lens too! Sooo sharp. You'll love it.

The ring on the 24-105L is quite soft too, so I guess its the same throughout the L range.

Just seems odd that Canon comment on it for the 70-300 but not the 24-105. Perhaps just an omission by who ever did the website.

Overkill warning in my view, maybe if you got a bit of grit caught in the sealing ring it just might slightly scratch the body lens mount face, I have a 70-200 and a 24-70 with sealing rings and I have no worries in respect to my nearly new 5d3.

The feedback in this 'thread' is good enough for me, to worry not.

As you say Matt, probably overkill, or maybe perhaps Canon just covering their backs.
