Anyone got one?What's your opinion of it? Thinking of getting one.Some reviews say it's a bit flimsy, but I wouldn't know. Or any good alternatives?

Never heard the Canon 70-300 IS USM being called flimsy. It's a superb lens.

Don't confuse this with the 75-300 USM which is utter crud.
 
I had an IS one. It was a cracking lens. In fact, when I bought my 100-400, I sold it. I now wish I hadn't.
 
I was talking to someone using one at an event yesterday and he was singing its praises.So I thought I'd look into one.

...you can only get the 70-300 with IS!

Yes but as per my initial post, I'm wondering if he has this confused with the massively inferior 75-300 as per the 'flimsy' comment?

Anyway -

70-300 IS USM = excellent.

75-300 (any version!) = not so good but cheap

Apologies, I read the quote before mine..yes I had the 70-300IS USM. Top lens :) I had no idea if there was a non IS or not, but misread the 75-300 (Which I do not have, and have no idea about :lol:)
 
I never suffered with 'floppy zoom' <snigger> Seriously, it was a good solid lens. You're welcome to check out my flickr, anything pre july would be my 70-300.

I was at Burghley HorseTrials and am thinking I would have got sharper photos with a lens such a this. ( There were plenty of what seemed like very expensive lenses there !)

It's an OK lens, just not great but perfectly acceptable.

The L version though is awesome.
 
For what kinds of shots would you use this lens? Thanks.
 
Mine mainly gets used at zoos and safari parks, places where you need that extra reach. I've also used it for motorsport and it would be good for street photography if you wanted to take pics from a distance.
 
I have a 70-300mm IS USM.

I have mixed feelings about it... it seems like a outdated design to me, the front rotates, the USM doesn't allow manual focus in AF mode and the IS grumbles and groans... but the IQ is respectable :D

If they'd update it to fix the thngs that I find annoying I might even buy the new one even with no increase in IQ.
 
I have one too, really like it.

I really like the IS and my zoom neither flops or creeps. The AF can hunt if the light gets a bit low, but that could be down to my ageing 400D :-)
