Im not sure which of these to go for does the extra 100mm plus IS of the 70-300 make that one a better buy thanks for your opinions:)

depends totally on what you are shooting as to whether IS is important. For me i'd go with the L series every time but that i because i rarely use 300mm and IS isn't important for what i shoot.
More info needed though in order to advise of the best solution for YOU

I had the same dilemma but had to settle for the 70-300 IS as cash was tight. I've been very pleased so far. The IS has made a big difference for me and I find the extra zoom length very useful. I would still have preferred the L with IS just because everyone says how good it is but I don't regret saving the money. It's a good lens for the money and a good step up from the basic kit lenses. I bought a second hand 70-300IS off here, and am very pleased with it. Would deffinatly recommend it. Like Big A mentioned - it depends totally on what your shooting.

Ray,

I have both. I've had the 70-300 for a while but bought the F4 to go with my new 50D. Personally I prefer using the 70-200, but there's not much wrong with the 70-300, and the added reach is useful.

Looking at your post history (nosey me,) you seem to have a thing for flowers (?) I see you have a wideangle zoom and a short dedicated macro already. I assume you are looking at the non IS 70-200mm F4L (?)
In which case, the non L lens gives you +100mm and IS - and more wonga left in your pocket.
Given that you (appear to) favour static subjects, and flowers aren't known for their speed in running away, I doubt the IS would be the deciding factor for you. The extra reach might be though.

I was in a similar position, and went for the 70-300. I do a fair bit of wildlife, and for shy animals even 300mm isn't really long enough a lot of the time! The IS is a massive plus, I didn't think it was too important till I switched it off, it's VERY noticable! I plan to get a 70-200 f/2.8 in the future, but I'll still be keeping the 70-300 if I can. For me, the f/4 wasn't enough to counter the loss of 100mm and IS.

You could always get a secondhand one from here, they hold their value well, then re-sell if you decide to go for the 70-200?

Chris

Thanks for all the comments the thing is i had the 70-300 and sold it as i thought it wasnt long enough for some things but now i find im missing it so i think i will get another one cheers all(y)

If you can afford it go for the 70-200 L. You can always add a 1.4X teleconverter for the extra reach.

BUT, then you'll be looking at spending (new prices):

£523.79 (70-200) + £246.87 (TC) = £770.66 for 280mm @ f/5.6, compared to

£409 for 300mm @ f/5.6, with IS,

And there will be a little image degradation due to the TC as well........ Something to think about!

I have the 70-300mm and wouldn't be without it. The IS works a treat and is ideal for hand held shots of static subjects and easy to switch off if you are after a moving subject. I have man other lenses, but I don't think I could ever let this go.

Hi,

Kerso is only about £349 plus postage for the 70-300 IS and £465 plus post for the 70-200 right now, the 70-300 IS is a good lens, a bit slow in the AF stakes but it's still a good lens, my dad has one and although he preferred his 70-200 for colour and contrast the 70-300 isn't far off it.

Samples of each:

70-300 IS - ISO 200 1/1600th @ F8

70-300 IS - ISO 800 1/400th @ F5.6

70 - 200 F4 - ISO 400 1/500th @ F4.0

Not much in it really although there is no doubting the 70-200 F4 is the slightly superior lens, the extra 100mm and the IS on the 70-300 is VERY handy, just don't expect to put a Canon TC as they don't fit on it (y)
