Canon 75 - 300 EF USM

I was hoping to get a telephoto lens more powerful than the 18 - 55 I currently have, being a beginner i dont want to spend too much now as I'm hardly going to be taking any pro shots!

Is this lens a reasonable option for my Canon 500D or is there a better alternative in a similar price band?

Is buying second hand lenses a feasible option or is that best avoided.

Buying second hand from a reputable source is a great idea. What are you intending to photograph as that has a lot of bearing on which lens is suitable for you.
