Canon 7D Design Fault?

No
I purchased a 7D from a large American owned company in Southampton last year and the camera would not hold its charge. I sent it back and was told that in their opinion thare was a design fault which allowed water to run the strap and then pool on top of the camera which slowly let water into the camera. The end result was corrosion on the main chassis of the camera and a bill for over £400. After many phone calls and 3 months they have agreed to pay for thre repair! I now need to write to Canon head office or similar in the UK or perhaps even Japan but I'm not sure of addresses, can any one help please.

the battery wouldnt hold its charge...

how much rain did you expose it to?

Wonder if anyone else has had the same issue? I've been thinking about upgrading to a 7D.

I don't think it was much rain, I've been taking photos for just over 40 years and 25 of these have been with Canon cameras and I have never had this problem before. Could be that the corrosion was already there and like old fashioned car batteries it just seems to grow on it's own.

So if the Canon was repaired under guarantee, it should have gone to Canon and they would surely supply a receipt confirming what repair had been done? The information should be on that receipt? Perhaps not done yet? See below

Would have thought Bestbuys should have supplied this info.

Must have been a hell of a lot of rain, I shot my totally unsealed 30D in a down pour so hard that when I got home nothing worked and the LDC screen flickered on and off even when the camera was switched off.. Let it dry for a week and it shoots fine. That was back in 2009 and it's still working 100% OK.

I think somebody was trying to pull as fast one on you.

If it went to Canon Elstree you would get a very detailed invoice.

Excuse me butting in but isnt jessops next door to best buy and London camera exchange are in southampton, best buy are complete idiots, NEARLY got a 5D from them but they didnt have a clue on the camera specs and dodnt seem to care, also there stock is sometimes imported aparantly wether thats true or not i dont no. Take it to london camera exchange civic center they arw a canon pro dealer and will help you. Ask to speak to spike.

Did you at any time just try a another battery,to see if it was just the battery not holding the charge, the camera does not hold the charge it is the battery.

And dont forget you dropped it twice as well :( I remember, the day I saw it fly out of your camera bag and crash to the floor, luckily it landed in soft muddy ground

So were you taking photos in rain, which was so heavy that it ran down the camera strap and pooled on top of the camera and you didn't wipe the water off?

Shh! I may want to sell it some time in the future :lol:

Thanks everyone. The camera was eventually sent to Colchester Camera by the 'Big' retailer and they did the repairs very quickly and effeciently, the camera was back and working in days. I wish I had purchased it from a specialist camera shop but at the time the 'Big' shop had a special offer because they were just opening their new southern store making them the cheapest. I am disappointed with Canon because they didn't want to get involved and just said that the retailer should exchange it under the sale of goods act because it was 'not fit for purpose' and then emailed me the details of the law. It was the right hand lug that the water allegedly leaked in through, I would post a picture up on the forum but I’m sure how to.
