Canon 7d Exposure compensation

Hello all.
I currently own a Canon 450d this is my first dslr and I really like it.Trouble is my Daughter is going to University in September and she would like a camera so it is agreed she will have my little beauty whilst I move with the times.(well still behind the times but not as far)
I have been into a camera shop today and had play with the 7d. It felt ok but buttons were different as you would expect but I guess after a few weeks that would become second nature again.
The thing worrying me most is the exposure compensation. On my 450d "In Av" you could have the camera to your face and just use your thumb to hold the av exposure button in whilst scrolling the wheel with your index finger.
Can this be done without taking camera away from your face and with the one hand on the canon 7d ?
I use back button focus too at the moment I am assuming that can be configured.

Short answer is yes! Go buy a 7D!
 
Just need to turn the large control wheel on the back with your thumb, couldn't be simpler really

BBF is easily assigned to the dedicated AF button so sounds like it's ideal for you

No problem Gaz, personally think the 7D is a very user friendly camera especially the way it can be customised for almost every control function

Autofocus is failry complex, but excellent once you have got your head round it

Think you will find the C1, 2 and 3 settings a real improvement over your 450D

The 7D is a great camera, read the manual and then read it again. Don't try and change every conceivable setting at first just because you can. Take it steady and you will find it a great bit of kit.

Gary, after owning a 450D for 1½ years, I moved to a 7D. It felt like a huge leap initially and took me a little while to get used to it, the AF capabilities in particular. However, the 7D is very intuitive to use and I soon got used to it, including using BBF

I still have the 7D and cant bear to part with it, even though I've now got a couple of 1Dx's :bonk:

Go buy the 7D today :thumbs:

Tried in Jessops. Just ordered online. Sorry Jessops but there is no way they can complete with online prices it's a shame but money is hard to come by.

Oh yes. It's charged now. Feels like a brick towards the 450d.
Got the back button thing sorted.Seem to have found most of the buttons I need to know.They are just not where I'm used to.
Now this focus thing looks like it could be fun_____so many choices. Can only see me using the single point most of the time as before but this time being able to focus with all of them :-)
Off reading up today it seems the other most used focusing mode is man selection af expansion. For moving panning objects.Using AI servo.
My wife is doing a charity run in a couple of weeks so I could try that mode out there.

Might want to check the tracking speed on AI servo, not sure what the default setting is, but wants to be on the slow side.
Also beware that the focus point doesn't light up red on single shot unless you set it up (that's if you want it)

I noticed that playing around here at home that the single point seems to light up if the scene is dark yet doesnt if camera is pointed at a bright scene eg this monitor it does bleep though.
So I will need to alter the tracking speed to make it slower ? Sounds odd.

I assume making these changes are only effective when in ai servo using the expansion focus mode or for anything moving in the zones ?
Or put another way when in normal usuage spot focus point/single point in one shot af.Those settings don't take effect.

What I usually do is assign these sports settings to C1 custom function mode and when at the event use this as a starting point and adjust as necessary for the conditions at the time.

I set C2 custom function mode for "normal" usage with spot focus, one shot etc and again use the settings as a start point and adjust as necessary
 
Yes I see what you mean.I guess it's the same as ____ I always leave my camera set to av_2.8 iso 400 and single spot focus and then change as per the situation. So you have a few starting points set up for any given situation.Sounds clever and maybe I should read a touch more before messing with the c1/2 settings.

Well I have my old lenses.Not L lenses though. My fav is a 28mm 1.8.So that will be on most the time.

24-105 pretty much all of the time :D
 
Hi all just an update but not a good one really.

My 7d gave me an error within the first couple of days of owning it ERR on top lcd (didnt notice the code number) Had to remove and replace battery to power the camera up again and clear the fault code then all was well.
Stomach sank but I thought early days and with all the button pushing and changing of settings it could be just one of those things and could have been user caused. Anyways it did it once a few days later whilst out and about and it happened earlier tonight whilst I was reviewing some images on the lcd.
The code given is 40 which apparently means a power problem. After Googling around it seems quite a common error and to be honest I couldnt find a thread on the net that gave a definative answer I also couldnt find anyone whom didnt have to have the camera repaired :-(
Any thoughts ?

Hi,

Have you a Newish Canon lens to Try, read somewhere about trying that.

It might need a new PCB Board which means you will have to Send it back.

Google 7D Error 40, many Reports about this.

Where did you buy it?

I had emailed the supplier 5 minutes before posting the above, just to let them know I had a problem.
Anyways I have just opened my emails and they have replied.
They are offering a full refund or a replacement camera as the fault as occurred within the first 14 days.
To be honest I am in a quandry now as I have lost a bit of faith in the camera.At the time I was split between buying a second user 5d mark 2 still selling for around a £1k but went for the 7d because of price and this all singing focus I kept hearing about plus all my lenses would fit.I have 2 lenses that would fit full frame.

Both the 7D and the 5DII are great pieces of kit. If you do more wildlife/action/sports, stick with the 7D. If you do more portrait/landscape, go for the 5DII

I don't really have a passion for anything in particular, still gotta find that but I did think the 7d was probably more versitile as I just generally like taking photos. Having siad that I have only shot my missus running a handfull of times so I guess that counts sports as pretty low and wildlife one woodpecker in the garden oh and fox out the back, so I guess i'm no wildlife shooter either.
If you have a minute to spare could you just flick through some pages of my flickr stream as these are the types of images I photogragh as all my images go on there. Apart from the latest 2 they are all shot with the 450d.
Understand if you havent the time nor inclination.

Hi Nigel thank you so much for taking the time.
I have just been down to Calmunet Manchester as they have an open day today. The place was rammed but gave me a chance to have a mooch around all the gear.
They had a 6d there (not heard much about them but it did feel good in the hand).
I will get my money back and take it from there. Thats what my gut seems to be telling me.

What firmware version do you you have? If it's 2.0.0 then this is a known problem, update to 2.0.3
 
Hi thanks for trying to help out.I just checked and it's 2.0.3. The camera through the fault again yesterday it happened whilst reviewing images on the lcd it did it the same way last time. The time before that it was whilst trying to use the tracking focus.The times it happened before that it was when just changing settings in the menus.
 
This is just a heads up to the people on this thread that encouraged me to buy the 7d. Although this camera has thrown the err40 half a dozen times it works flawlessly after removal of the battery and replacement. I have the paperwork to send it back now which although costly, I feel it's the best option as if I was to go down the route of getting it repaired under warranty I would still end up packaging it up to go for a quote and get it repaired which on something brand new I was not keen on.
Anyways I digress.
The point of me updating was to say. My Wife ran a charity event today.I took the photos and I'm no expert and am only using the kit lens from my 450d.
Took over 200 shots and the focus was simply perfect the camera never seemed to miss at all.
No wonder peeps love this camera for sport with the right lens and the right person's finger on the shutter ;-)
