Canon 7d or 1d mkIII?

Hi, just moved back to Canon from Nikon, bought 5d mkII for landscape / portraits.

I also shoot some equestrian events and wondered on folks opinions on 7D v 1D mkIII (can't afford mk iv!). £1000 ish budget.

Have shot 40d and 1d mkii n before and that was a no brainer in terms of better focus win for 1d, but 7d is supposed to be better and 8fps is enough for me.

Lens 100-400mm L

Not that bothered about video, but concerned about high ISO and focus of 7D compared to mkIII.

Thanks for your advice.

Personally I'd be inclined to look at the 7D. It's APS-C which will help you with reach, and, particularly for an APS-C body, very very impressive ISO performance.

how do you like the feel of the 5? the body is similar but a little more comfy

the problem is you will bin the 100-400 for softness immediately as the high pixel density shows it up badly, I mean it makes my 70-200/2.8 look soft

both the 7D and your 5D use the same batteries. I have a 7D and found the focus to be very quick and not a huge amount of difference between the 1D mk III ( I get to play with a friends when we go to motorbike events ).

The 1 D is a better camera, weather sealing, image quality and iso performance but again there is not a huge amount in it. One advantage of a 7D is you will get one with a warranty and some places if you shop around will give a two year one and for me that is a very big consideration.

It is horses for courses, good luck

I decided on the 7d over the 1dIII as it just felt better in the hands! Strange way of picking a camera but as the two cameras seemed to have similar specs then it came down to weight and feel. I also like the fact that it uses the same batteries as my 5dII

Just got a 1D mk3 for mostly equine. I can't fault its focus, miles ahead of the 50D in terms of keepers. Means I can now reliably shoot at 2.8 when indoors in low light :) The battery lasts forever (done a wedding, all day dressage and evening showjumping) and it still has about 40% left. Also not caring when it starts raining is nice :)

I disagree with the bin the 100-400 comment. Mine has never been better than when attached to my 7D!
I might question whether it would be fast enough to deal with indoor arenas though.

And for equine when you're in arena, the 1.3 crop of the 1d I find spot on on a 70-200.

edit: I would think you would struggle with a 100-400 on a full crop in arena. Great for cross country though.

Thanks for the comments:

I Like the 5D mkII, I only shoot dressage in arenas so thought the 5D would suffice and ff would give me the range with 100-400mm and can shoot upto 1600.

Longer term I will invest in either new 120-300mm OS or 70-200mm II.

One small frustration why couldn't they keep the same grip for 5d and 7d???

Not at all strange - that is possibly the best way to pick a camera!

Does the 7D have micro adjust to deal with this. 100-400mm do come in bad and good ones imo.

Bude....a lovely part of the world had a few good holidays near Widemouth Bay!

Micro adjust only deals with the auto focus - what david is saying is the optical quality of the 100-400mm will potentially be shown up by the 7D pixel density.

Have to remember this when explaining to the wife why Canon L primes are an absolute necessity!:naughty:
