Canon 7D or 5dMk111

I currently use a 7D for Wildlife with a 400D as spare, I am considering replacing 400d but cannot make my mind up. Will the new 5D be an improvement for wildlife on the 7D or not.

It sounds like a cracking camera but switching to full frame from a crop the obvious disadvantage for wildlife would be the loss of reach with your lenses.

Full frame is not a big issue, currently using 100-400mm and 500f4 with 1.4 & 2x extenders.
I am keen to know whether the autofocus on the 5Dmk111 is better than the 7D

I own both cameras. The AF system on the 5D is simply superb and certainly more advanced and customisable than the 7D. You should certainly consider trying the 5D out.

I also have both.. Just got my 5d MKIII i got some very nice birds in flight with it on my first test. Great AF and well worth a look

I think you'll find the AF system on the 7D is better than the 5dII. It's widely accepted that that's the case.

On the Mkii yes, the AF system on the Mkiii comes from the 1Dx and is reckoned to be superb.

I reckon a Mkiii would sit beautifully alongside your 7D, full frame and a crop, every eventuality covered.

Agreed. The mkIII is basically a mkII with all the good parts from the 7D brought over. Just a shame about that price.

But I'm talking about the Mark III not the Mark II.

I'm not sure why you thought I was talking about the Mark II.

I sold my 7D and 5D2 to finance the purchase of my 5D3, which I received yesterday and have been out with today. The AF system of the 5D3 is amazing compared to the 5D2 and is better than that of the 7D IMO. Without any more than 20 minutes setting up I've got some great photos, including BIF which I struggled with even with the 7D at times. The focus points are well spread out making it easier to track subjects and the cross points are so accurate I don't have to use the centre point only to get good focus.
I would of been happy with the AF system of the 7D on the body of the 5D2, but with the 5D3 the outcome is even better than that.

thanks everyone looks like I am going to have have a play with a 5dmk3 then. Try before buy !
