Canon 7D or 60D

I have been enjoying using my 450D for a year now and have started to think that an upgrade would be good. My skill level doesn't warrant the step up to full frame and I would certainly not be in a position to change all my lenses, so the above seem like the next step.

Does anyone have comments about either or experience of both before I take the plunge.

Based on my reading (not practical use), I would say 7D if you can stretch to it. Unless you absolutely, desperately, life-or-death need the fold-out screen, the 7D is the better camera.

I think you need to be sure what you want to take pictures of before you start selecting a new model, or even brands (for those not already owning several lenses). The entry level cameras do everything ok, as you move up the range cameras will excel in one area while making more of a departure from some other area. For example the 7D excels in moving subjects so it favors sports and wildlife. It will take a nice landscape picture too but this is not where the 7D excels. The 5DMkII is perfect for stationary or very slow moving subject and would not make a great motorsports body.

I prefer action shots so the 7d suites me but if my primary subject of interest was landscape or portrait or wedding I'd be having a 5D.

The canon website is a great resource for questions like this. There you can do side by side comparisons for all the specifications for all the current bodies.
 
If you can afford it then go the 7D route - that was the camera that made me think seriously about switching from Nikon. Canon seems to have rejuggled their camera designations and it seems that the 7D is the successor to the X0D range.

The 60D seems to have disapointed the Canon crew as it was not what was expected given the preceding cameras in that range. That said, it's still a very competent camera, and will be a step up from what you have already. However if you feel you're ready then the 7D is the way to go IMO.

If you're going to be shooting lots of things that move fast (wildlife and sports) then the 7D is a must. Otherwise get the 60D and put the £300 savings towards some nice lenses.

Honestly, the image quality, build and handling differences beltween the two are negligible.
 
another vote for the 7d its a super camera.

The 60D is fine for most purposes and is a big step up from the xxxD series of cameras. The 7D has better AF as already mentioned.

Given they use the same sensor, there should be very little difference.

When I was looking a couple of weeks ago, I came across a site that compared the 7D to the 450D with the same lens - and also put downloadable raw images of exactly the same subjects/same lenses/same time of day. Apart from the slight scale advantage to the 7D, there was a difference in the way the colours were reproduced - the 7D seemed to be richer colours (deeper blues, slightly less washed out feel). Looking at image sharpness/resolution/fidelity I'd have been happy with either (and I was pixel peeping!).
 
Been testing out the 7D's and the 5DMkII lately as I'm looking for an upgrade from the 40. I'm impressed by the 7 to be honest. I think it's a great camera, and if you're not ready to go FF then stretch for it.

You are not comparing similar cameras here...

And both have different price brackets...

Since you are thinking which one to get, you probably can afford the 7D...

Its clearly the superior camera...I'd go for it....

I guess what he meant is that he was comparing the 7D to the MkII, which is a beast....

That supports the argument that the 7D is the superior choice...

I'm confused. I have a full frame camera because I think the quality of the pictures from it are better than a crop camera. Full frame is about a picture quality, not a skill level... Whether that extra tweak to picture quality is worth the extra dosh probably depends more on your financial situation rather than your skill level...
 
Thanks for all the comments, as ever both have good points and I think I will try to get some hands on time with them both before I make my final decision
