Hi guys,

I am currently looking at upgrading my main body and it is between the 7d and 5dmkii.

I am swaying a little bit towards the 7d due to the price & the much better focus. The ISO is still useable at 12,000 odd and I doubt I will need that very often. I have been shooting with the 5d classic for a couple of years and I have only ever had to take that up to 3,200 a couple of times (with fairly poor results).

Have any of you got experience with the 7d? Or have any of you recently had a similar decision to make?

Would love to hear your thoughts. Always great to get a 2nd opinion!

The answer surely depends on what you are intending to shoot and in what sort of conditions. The 7D is sort of like a sports car - fast and nimble but perhaps not so lush - and the 5D2 is more like a luxury limo, slower for sure, but far more refined. AFAIK you shoot people/portraits/studio (and weddings, of course), so I would have thought the 5D2 would be the more natural choice for you, but if you also shoot (fast) action, sports and wildlife then perhaps the 7D would be the better all rounder for your needs.

If you want the speed and AF performance of the 7D, but lush IQ and DOF control closer to full frame then what about a second hand 1D3? If you shoot outdoors with Speedlites you might also find the 1/300 sync speed a handy bonus, not to mention the weather sealing, built in grip, huge battery life, 100% viewfinder, +/- 3 stop meter, dual card slots, blah, blah, blah..

FWIW I have all three cameras and while they are all great performers they undoubtedly have strengths and weaknesses, but only you know which ones are most important to you.

I'm not sure about 12,800 ISO being usable on the 7D. Personally I'm not that keen on my 7D, though it's a perfectly decent camera - I prefer the IQ of my 5D MK I. If you were shooting a lot of wildlife or sports I'd say 7D but otherwise definitely the 5D MK II imo.

I borrowed one to shoot a wedding a few weeks ago and the IQ as high ISOs (and generally) is much better than the 7D.
 
I have both. I don't do photos of things that move much. If I had to have only one camera, it would be the 5D2.
 
I recently had to make this decision. I really fancied the 7D as I had handled one and it felt really good. However, given that I shoot mainly landscapes, architectural and I am now experimenting with still life, I decided to go with the 5D2. I know now that it was exactly the right decision. The detail which can be packed into thoses FF shots is astounding. I wouldn't swap it for any other camera.

Hope the 5d mk1 is still functioning for you!

The mk2 is probably the one for you unless you're moving into sport or wildlife. It sells for about £1500 at the mo' BUT I have read that with the introduction of the mk 3 the RRP of the mk 2 will be reduced (by $300 in the US, I think I read) So I'd hang fire for a while to see if the same happens here.

What about the 5dmk3? its basically the 7d + 1dx + 5d2 all put together. its the best all rounder IMO.

Did u say you already use/have a 5dc? then if your on a cheap budget, i'd go for a 7d and keep the 5dc
 
I've had a 7D for nearly two years and it's a great camera especially for sports, however I wished I'd gone for the 5D II for the better low light performance.
 
I have a 7D which I've had to use at iso12800 to shoot indoor dressage and after pp with Nik's Dfine2 the images weren't too bad. Definitely not the best photos I've ever taken but they were sharp and focused and better than not having any at all, they printed unto 10x8 as well!!
