Yes
I've decided I'm going to give Canon a try specifically because I want to try the 85mm f1.8 and 70-200 F4 non-IS.

Would anyone put me off buying a used or new 7d? I can't really find an alternative for what I need it for (sport). The 70d's RAW buffer doesn't seem that great. Maybe a 60d?

I've always wanted to try the 85mm and 70-200 F4 as they seem 2 of the best 'bang per buck' lenses out there. If Nikon or Sony had a 70-200 F4 for £430 then I might have kept my D300 or bought an A6000.

I had a 7D for over 5 years and think it's a great camera. I've recently sold it but only because I've upgraded and would have had no problem continuing to use it.

Apart from its low light IQ, it's a fantastic camera. I still have a couple and have no problem using it, and I'll use it happily at higher ISOs than I could have used with film.

I went from 60d to 7d and I don't regret it at all! I love the focus system and find it a great camera to use!

I would say it's still a very capable camera and I don't plan to upgrade for a few years tbh

Someone has just bought one of these for £160 in the for sale section - an absolute steal at that price.

D

Cheers all.

I'd have kept the Nikon and spent your money on a sigma or tamron f2.8!

Nah. I want to travel light & don't fancy lugging a 70-200 f2.8 around with me.

7d - £400 with 6 month warranty.
85mm - £180 with 6 month warranty
70-200 f4 - £315 with 6 month warranty

Total - £895.

That's great. I was £1088 for my body only 7D just over 4 yrs ago!! lol

1dmk111 secondhand is also a good bet , just a thought !

I saw a used one for sale somewhere. £575 seems quite expensive for one in excellent condition.

It's a shame there aren't any Canon APS-C DSLR's that have class leading high ISO performance.

Afaik all the crop sensor canon's have comparable image quality. If I was you I'd look into a 5d2 or even a 5dmk1 over a 7d, so you get the full glory of the 2 full frame lenses you've picked out

I knew I sold it too cheap?! :( :) :naughty: :canon:

Too cheap! I thought it was a typo when I saw the ad.

I had the 5Dii and it is a nice camera but not a serious sports tool. It is also twice as much 2nd hand as a 7D or 4x on Jackwow prices. The classic is just that now. A 1Diii would be a better bet if spending more.

The 7D is great but after ISO 800 noise creeps in after 1600 if really shows but with the lens you are after you should be ok even on a dull day. IS on a 200 would give you more uses though.

For sports?

I'll get the 2 lenses mentioned and then possibly have a rethink on the body. I'm in no particular rush as I don't think it would get much use over the next few months anyway.

To be honest, if I was considering full frame, I'd likely save up and get a Nikon D610 (£799) on import.

I've got a 5d3 and the 85 and I love the length. I don't know for me if it would be too long on a crop.
I've also got a 70-200 and hardly ever use it anymore.

This has always been my approach. Buy one of the professional 2nd hand bodies and not a newer semi-pro or consumer one. My view is that this is best value for money.

I'm almost clicking 'buy' on the 85mm f1.8 but I'm worried that a 7d won't get the best from it. What used full frame choices (for sport) do I have apart from a 1d mk iii?

I'm even considering the Nikon d610 now with the 70-200 f4. I can get a new d610 for a few hundred £ more than a used 1d mk III.

Or even a used D700?

Oh dear, I knew this was going to happen.

I saw a 1D II N advertised on here recently I'm sure...

a 1Dmkiv seriously i use a 1d3 ,have owned in the past 40d,50d,60d ,70d,7d,in canon ,in nikon d90,d60,d7000,d7100 disaster,d200, d300s .the one camera i love and have kept is the 1D3 what it lacks in mp it makes up for in sheer i.q

I'm still no clearer as too what I'm going to buy.

I'm tempted to get a Canon 70-200 f4 now while I have the cash. This would enable me to get a used Canon in January.

Others I have considered apart from a used 7d:-

Nikon D700 (used) with Tamron 70-300 VC. (£750 ish)
Nikon D610 with Tamron 70-300 VC. (£1030 ish)
Nikon D7000 with Tamron 70-200 f2.8 VC. (£900 ish)
Nikon D7200 with 70-200 f4. (£1300 ish). This would be ideal but, of course, it's the most expensive. :(
Sony A6000 with 70-200 f4. (£1080 ish)
Canon 40d with 70-200 f4 and get a 7d mkII (import) nearer Summer 2016. (£530 ish).

Ideally though, I don't want to go over £400 for a used body.

Any further advice would be appreciated.

Due to ill health, I might be selling my 7D after Christmas. It only has about 4000 shutter count, so please watch the classifieds, if you are interested.

Sorry to hear that.

I have, however, decided to get a Sony A6000 with 50mm f1.8 and 55-210. I just want to get out there and have a bit of fun without breaking my back. I'll likely get a 70-200 f4 nearer Summer.

Sorry to resurrect this thread.

I did get an A6000 in the end and am about to buy another lens for it. I was going for the 70-200 f4 but am, again, having 2nd thoughts. I just need some feedback.

I'm now thinking of getting the 18-105 f4 for the A6000 to go with my 50mm 1.8 (didn't get the 55-210).

In addition, I'm then thinking of getting a used 7d or 60d (leaning towards a 60d so I can stick with SD cards) with the 70-200 f4 non-IS.

18-105 f4 - around £330 (buy at a later date)
60d/7d - around £300-400
Used 70-200 f4 - £300

I'd then be covered from 18-200 albeit on 2 different bodies.

or

Sony 70-200 f4 - £735.

What would you do? Main use would be for horse racing in decent light - paddock and track.

If the Sony is quick enough stick with that, I've had both the 60D and 7D. Wasn't impressed with the IQ on either but the 7D was a very quick camera
