Hi folks,

Not sure if it's been mentioned, the new Canon 80D has been announced.

The Canon EOS 80D features a 24.2 megapixel APS-C CMOS image sensor and 7,560-pixel RGB+IR metering sensor which capture incredible detail and vivid, natural colours at highly accurate exposures, powered by the DIGIC 6 image processor.

It’s easy to capture the moment with 7 frames per second continuous shooting and a precise 45-point all cross-type AF system that performs effortlessly across all types of lighting scenarios, with a multitude of lenses.

ISO sensitivity ranges from 100-16,000 and is expandable to 25,600. Flicker Detection ensures you achieve excellent results when shooting in flickering artificial light or low light conditions.

The Canon 80D has a 3.0 inch (7.7 cm) variable angle LCD touchscreen, so you can shoot with Live View at 5fps with continuous AF. The Intelligent Viewfinder provides 100% frame coverage, so everything is visible - including your settings.

Full HD 1080p 60p movie recording is available on the 80D and you can also shoot in slow motion in MP4 format with selectable frame rates.The addition of Dual Pixel CMOS autofocus lets you accurately track moving subjects, and Timelapse Movie, Creative Filters, and HDR modes are also available.

Built in Wi-Fi and NFC allows you to remotely shoot via the Camera Connect app on compatible smart devices, or alternatively you can use the EOS Utility software. Furthermore, you can transfer files to the Canon CS100 Connect Station and also print images on compatible printers.

Glad it's not just me!

Does this mean that the 70D will be reduced in price then as this supersedes it in the range? I'm used to this in bike manufacturer's ranges but bit new to camera buying...

Yup I'd love to know whether I could use it on my 18-135 STM. Looks like it means it allows smooth zooming in and out for video control. There's also a hotshoe mic that Canon are releasing so maybe they're pushing the video side of this camera.

Yup. The 60D was superseded by the 70D which in turn is superseded by the 80D. The 70D was around £1000 at release and has dropped to £650 or so. I doubt it will drop even further by more than £50.

Yes prices will come down a lot. I've just sold my 70D body got £430 for it s/h so reckon new will be around £550-650 mark new soon enough, they're currently £700 in curry's!
 
Had a look at the WEX video this morning. Initial thoughts are that the 80D opens a new capability for video. An interesting change is the use of the 5D3 battery in the 80D body.

The new lens will use a 'nanoUSM' motor rather than the STM.

The Canon guy was suggesting the 80D would be a good second body to back up th 7D2. Interesting!

For me I am likely to stick with my now 70D/750D pairing but for many the 80D and it's 45 point AF system will be of great interest for motorsport and other fast moving subjects.

The best of the 70D/750D/760D all rolled into one package with a little bit more, plus a new lens..... and range?

Didn't Canon have Power Zoom lenses around 20 years ago?. I know Pentax and Minolta did but not sure about Canon or Nikon. Whether those old Canon PZ lenses (if there were some) can be used on newer bodies is another matter. In Pentaxland the PKAF3 mount with the SDM contacts allows the use of SMC-FA zoom lenses one the K-series but with some limitations - ie I can use my FA*28-70 Power zoom on my K-3/K-5.

The 70D body only was £1k on its release and levelled off to about £850 after around six months. I imagine the 80D will follow a similar pattern.

Thanks, so I guess the question I have to ask myself is will I get £150 worth of enjoyment out of it in 6 months...(probably that's a good chunk of a motorsport season).....or shall I just wait for any bugs to settle down anyway.

At launch the 70D body only was £1079! As Owen says though generally takes around 4 - 6 months for the new adopter tax to settle and the price even out.

I'm very interested too. I've owned a 60D for 5 years, I would really like the improved metering/AF/MFA/100% viewfinder/FPS. I'm a non professional and don't know if the extra weight of the 7Dii is worth it for my needs. I have no interest in a touch screen and would rarely shoot movie.

I find the flip screen a benefit, I rarely ever shoot in live view, the only time is when I want a shot where it may not be possible to lie on the floor etc and tilt the screen. I find AF in live view on the 60D to be very poor.

It is the suggested RRP but 3-4 months down the line will see some discounting/bundles/lightning deals etc. The 70D was peaking around the £1K body only mark when it came out and can noe be had for around £525 (grey) or £620 (duty paid).

I like the initial outline and spec of the 80D but I am content with my 70D/750D combination which, as I enter my dotage, is likely to be my final upgrade point. (I still have my original 300D which was purchased new with the original Mk 1 kit lens when it first arrived for sale). I paid £752 for it all those years ago. I think the £999.99 price for the 80D, when compared with the average earnings in August 2003, when the 300D was released for sale, could be described as a bargain! "We've never had it so good". It's also nice to have a few spares when friends come to stay as having Bath, Wells, Chepstow etc all local, it's nice to let some of the old kit out for their use! My grandchildren also get some hand me down kit but they are getting more denanding. Only a matter of time before the 80D catches their fancy!
 
If a grey is £850 at launch i'm picking one up to add to my 6D, if not i'll wait until mid July when it'll have to be bought in time for the summer holidays regardless of price. I want a fast focusing crop to compliment my 6D and eos-m and the 80D aside from lacking 4k, gps and zebras ticks all the right boxes for me. I've come close to a 7D MKII a number of times but i want wifi and touch / flippy screen so the 80D is perfect and the focusing system alone seems the price of admission over the 70D. As Steve said though price is relative, in 2008 i picked up a 'bargain' 40D from Amazon for £848.95 (but there was a cashback offer at the time) so 8 years on happy with paying in that ballpark for the latest fast midrange crop :)

I get where your focus is (tongue in cheek moment). I have a 5c for portrains/landscapes etc but the 70D has been my main body of late. On a whim I bought a 750D as a walkabout (knockabout) and it has surprised me with it's versatility. The whim was softened with a pile of Amazon gift cards and £100 cashback. I have just really enjoyed a trip to Ireland using the 750D with an EF-S 18-135 STM, EF-S 10-18 STM and an EF 40mm STM. I was very happy with the 750D. The extra focus points were great and the wi-fi connection to my IPad with the Canon Connect app made the use of the camera brilliant as I still have issues with my right hand since I had a stroke early last year. So easy!

Cue the 80D - 24.2 megapixel dual sensor, same as 750D, wifi, same as 750D, folding screen, same as 750D, then 80D focus points - 45 against 15 on the 750D..... game set and match but for the 80D - I will stick with the 70D for the rough and tumble shoots, I will follow what Canon do with pushing the 80D lens wise. The new 18-135mm nanoUSM lens with the optional autofocus motor is going to make it very interesting for video use. I did stick my eos-m in the bag with the ef-m 22mm attached. It did not see the light of day. Quite unusual.

I think you will see a grey 80D around your price point before you go away. The 750D/760D offerings may just muddy the waters on the 80D a bit.
 
@Hugh Jarse I kept looking at the 7x0D bodies when i was torn between the 70D and 7D MKII. The VFM offered by them is fantastic if you're already invested in Canon :).

Roll on March / April to see real world reviews of the 80D then all being well i'll see what Panamoz and Portus has to offer :)

Not fotgetting HDEW as well. Their price on the 70D has been amongst the lowest of late. See if they get any early 80D stock.
 
The more I read the more tempted I am to buy an 80D a few months down the road. I love the fact it has the 45 AF points. My 1DIV is now nearly 6 years old and I am finding that for most of my photography I grab the M3. I still use my 1DIV for wildlife because lets face it the M3 on a 500f4 just isn't practical.

I have now stopped shooting weddings so all of my photography is for fun now so I can't justify the cost of a 1DxII or even a 1Dx. I was planning on buying a new MacBook Pro and iPad Pro in the summer but now I might but the MBP and 80D instead and take it on my summer holiday to Canada.

I think in typing this I've convinced myself!!
 
I'm after changing my 7D for something more up to date but I didn't want the MKII as I do a lot of macro and was looking for something with a flippy screen.

This should do the job nicely and will also be more than adequate for the odd airshow as the fps is only 1 less than my present Canon and the AF system looks to be a lot better. (i have never really got on with the 7D af system, I did much better with the 50D)

It seems you have!

For me, I had got to a point that I was using my EOS M more and more and was looking forward to the 'new' one, which was the M3 which took too long coming..... so I stuck with the M, stuck a Toshiba Air SD card in it and bought an IPad air (wifi/4G) to stick the Toshiba app on it. Add to that the Verbatim MediaShare wifi card reader/streamer and charging brick and I had it all sorted for my travels, or so I thought.

The 70D and now including the 750D second body went to Ireland with me recently and with the Canon Connect App on the IPad; which allows me to control my kit 'in the field' very simply, I am set up even more simply.

I can see that the 80D will really be a huge temptation for many, as for you, but I am sticking now. I am comfy with my set up. That said, I have a number of grandchildren and 2 nieces who are very much into photography and who are my natural cascade path for my older kit. The eldest GD has just 'borrowed' my EOS50E/BG combination as 35mm film has caught her interest!

So who knows..... I will resist holding any 80D kit.... I will resist..... 45 AF points.... RIAT early summer, I will resist....
 
I was thinking about upgrading from my 700D to the 7Dmk2 but I *may* get the 80D now - I do a bit of everything really - landscapes, macro, sports, wildlife, fam, astro etc. and this sounds like a great all rounder camera - the jump in AF points would be 9 to 45. That's huge! and a jump from 5 to 7 fps is also a big jump. Add to that an upgraded sensor and more mps, it sounds great. Another thing which I really love is the articulated screen and the ability to swivel it etc.

When I was shooting the Super Blood Moon for example it was great, instead of having to crouch etc. I could stand up and compose the shots which made me feel more in control of the composition.

Yeah Mike there is a grip. Not sure what it's called but on Dpreview there's a pic of the camera with grip
 
Not that I use my 70d much for video, I'm surprised that they havnt gone 4K on the 80d! Seems the logical upgrade!!

I don't think I've ever taken a video with my 700D

Perhaps that's it. I think every time I've googled 80D in the last couple of months to see if there has been any news I've read a comment from someone saying they would expect 4k.

I get the impression the 70d was well regarded for video, but I wonder what percentage of xxD users actually use them for a significant amount of video v's stills work and of those how many would really need 4k v's 1080p @ 60fps enough to persuade them away from the 80D at this stage.

Was surprised at that too. I have the 70D but only got it as my 7D mk 1 was playing up. I did not use it for video. I then used up a pile of Amazon vouchers and the Canon Double Cashback for a cheap EOS750D body. I stuck my EF-S 18-135 STM on it after reading up on how the dual hybrid sensor on the 750D works with STM lenses for continuous AF. I gave it a go and I am a little hooked on the video function! It seems very accurate and the af is smooth and quiet.

The 80D may do the same but will see how different it is with the new EF 18-135 nanoUSM lens that is being shown on YouTube etc.

I am sticking with my 70D/750D combo..... now trying not attempting to guess what an EOS 90D spec might look like!

We live in exciting times.

Having said that I am going into Bath early tomorrow with an EOS 5 film camera and an old EF28-80 loaded with a roll of out of date FP4! A grey moment for me....
 
As above, I'd have expected 4K video by now. The GH4 from Panasonic was released Feb 2014 and had 4K.

I have used my 70D for video but only small segments. I really need an external mic, LED light and a shoulder support thing to do it properly.

what I'm thinking is at the moment. Jessops are offering £450 trade in on a 70d so a upgrade cost of £550. Even if in a couple of months the 80d drops in price the 70d resale value is going to do down as well. So would now be a good time to upgrade? seeing as most retailers are offering no where near what Jessops are. Not that I would want to use them.
