Canon 85mm 1.2 L owners beware the front element can simply drop out of these lenses.

Didn't know this was possible till mine rolled out onto a concrete floor last week - fortunately it bounced to my amazement -called Canon who tell me this does happen from time to time once the small amount of glue that holds them in when they leave the factory wears off.

Like I said - Beware - check yours is screwed in properly.

ahhh that can't be good :(

can you RMA the lens to cannon for a replacement?

I think the front element will pop out from most lenses if bounced off the floor so I don' think it's specifically an 85mm f/1.2 L problem lol

Mark 2 yes the element came lose from the barrel then rolled onto the floor

This happened to me once, not on a 85mm 1.2 but on a 135mm f2, the O ring that keeps the front element in place had come lose.

Luckily there was a bit of a clue something had gone wrong, it wouldn't autofocus beyond about 20 feet, so obviously I checked the lens over, and found the front O ring had almost unscrewed itself, so after gently screwing it back in place, I carefully added a dab of superglue to the O ring/inner lens barrel, and everything was fine.

Just checked my 85 f1.2 and it has a similar O ring that keeps the front element in place.

If this happens to mine will Canon repair it for a nominal fee or will I be charged full whack?

Seeing that it is due to poor design/workmanship, I'd be livid if they charged you a penny for the repair.

I have heard that you should never put super glue anywhere near lenses as the isocyanate fumes can condense on the glass and leave a smoky appearance. Does anyone know if this true ?

Well I know forensic scientists use 'superglue fuming' to lift latent fingerprints off surfaces which normally dont yield fingerprints easily, and the fingerprint is shown up by the 'cloudy' superglue, so it is very possible that it is true.

So the front element can drop off at any point, it's harder to mount than my missus when she has a headache and the focus is slower than wading through treacle.

Well I'm still in  with it.

Not had any problems in the 2 years since it happened, possibly because the superglue never went near the glass. And it's held solid for this time, so worked for me.

IMO there would be a very good case for getting a repair done at Canon's expense if under 6 years old - sale of goods act fit for purpose claim I'd say.

I believe the MkII version has only been around for about four years or so anyway, so I think Canon should definitely foot the bill.

Would be a bit gutted if I'd spent >£1500 on a lens and it was as prone to disintergrating as the nifty fifty.
