Just wondering is this a worthwhile lens to buy for a cropped sensor 550D if I already have the 50mm 1.8 ??
 
If you want that focal length, yes.

Do you find yourself wanting a narrower field-of-view when you use your 50mm lens?
 
85mm is my favourite focal length for headshots on my cropped Nikon. Depends how you shoot and if you feel you are lacking.

Can't comment on the Canon version from experience, but I'm pretty sure it's meant to be a nice super-sharp lens :)

I love a good prime :)
 
The 85/1.8 is a steal of a lens and paired with a 35mm prime I don't really even feel the need for a 50mm lens on a crop body.

The build & AF performance of the 85/1.8 are on a completely different planet than the 50/1.8.
 
I love this lens on my 7D.

Of course this is widely reported, but I've not really had issues such as this. And certainly it's nothing PSP or Lightroom can't sort out with a click of the mouse :)
 
It's the lens I'm looking to get next, having read some verry good reviews of it online. It's the perfect focal length in terms of something a little longer than my 17-55 f/2.8, and of course fast with a great build quality.
 
I had the 17-55 2.8. I'm returning it to get the 28mm 1.8 USM and the 85mm 1.8 USM (already have the 50mm 1.8) I will use the 18mm on the 18-55IS kit lens if I need something wider. My few days of flat out using the 17-55. I just couldn't justify the money (and I think primes are superior)
 
and all the lens' will work when I buy the 5d MK3 when it comes out eventually.....

It's not terrible by any means, but the 7D is merciless at revealing any lens weaknesses like this. I've not found it easy to remove in Lightroom unfortunately.

I have both the 85mm 1.8 and the 28mm 1.8. I absolutely love my 85mm, stupidly sharp at f2 and I find the length fine on a cropped 7d. When I get my 5dmkII it is going to get better.

The 28mm 1.8 is again great on a cropped sensor, for me that is. I find it a really good length for indoor portraits in tight spaces and even used it for landscape work where I didnt want to be very wide.

I have to say though that I love my 85mm. It has been such a cracking lens. It may not always be first choice as it has its purposes but I am blown away by the results from it.

Here is an 85mm grab shot of my daughter playing with water. It was so quick to respond to the AF. It wasnt wide open but still really good at 2.8 given the speed that I had to get the shot in.

Exposure Time = 1/3200"
F Number = F2.8
ISO Speed Ratings = 125
