I'm not sure on the price you should expect to pay? I have the MK2 version though and it's a superb lens - quite possibly THE perfect portrait lens. My MK2 couldn't be described as quick focusing though and it's quite a bit faster than the MK1 version.
If speed is that imprtant to you I'd say get the 85mm 1.8 and save yourself some money.
If you're talking about buying used private(not clear?), then I'd suggest something circa £850. Otherwise a retailer could ask for a bag of sand and more.
I'd guess anywhere between £800 - £1000 for a decent Mk1.
If you take the current price of the mkII as around £1800 or so (yes you can get cheaper and dearer) and then assume that a good used copy would return perhaps 70% of that, giving you £1260 then £200 - 300 less for a mark I would be a reasonable ball park figure.
I've used my MkII a LOT on pics of my Grandson and it does work for kids just fine. I know the mkI does focus quite a bit slower but it should be usable. It's very slow if you're trying to go from infinity to close up, but for most normal use it's acceptable.
But I'd agree with CT that the f/1.8 would be better if you really need fast focus, and it's a lot cheaper too and very very good in it's own right... just not as good as the f/1.2. But I'll admit to being biased on this one
