Picked up a Canon AE1 from a local dealer for £55. It was down from £70. It's in immaculate condition. Put a battery in and everything works perfectly, except for the battery level button. Strange.
People have cottoned onto that and the FD and breechlock lenses are now commanding a premium.Canon manual cameras had some great lenses that can be bought so cheap these days!
Everything works, self timer, metering etc. It's just not producing sound when the battery check is pressed or when the self timer is flashing. My first proper camera!!
Regarding the battery level - did you look at the manual? Does the meter needle swing at all? I just checked the manual and it needs to go to f/5.6 or wider.
Cheers. If required, the user manual is here...

I think the beep is for the AE-1 Program. With the original AE-1 you have to look in the viewfinder at the meter needle.Everything works, self timer, metering etc. It's just not producing sound when the battery check is pressed or when the self timer is flashing.
You're spot on, thanks for the update.I think the beep is for the AE-1 Program. With the original AE-1 you have to look in the viewfinder at the meter needle.
There will be some on ebay. Careful not to get ripped off by people asking for silly money. Someone was asking over £30 for a hand grip/battery door cover. https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/170..._jCOTwBsTQ4akO2WU3Sm1DeeLjPHyqcBoCtfMQAvD_BwEmy Canon AE-1 needs a new battery compartment door
I've emailed Miles Whitehead -- anybody else do Canon repairs...? thanks
