Canon and Nikon Price Increases - Check this out

Hello,
Been scouring the internet and local supplies recently for some new / "previously enjoyed" (aka second hand) CANON kit and as noted elsewhere on this forum absolutely horrified at the prices being asked compared to a month or so ago. I think that just about everyone who is looking for new kit will be aware of this but today, I came across www.CornwallCameras.co.uk and gave them a call despite seeing what I was after listed as "in stock".

I was told that CANON and NIKON gave their resellers the opportunity to purchase at the old prices a few weeks ago before prices went up to them by 25% - which led to them receiving lots of "two of these", "three of them" orders.

The chap at Cornwall Cameras assured me that although they had no or low stocks at the moment, equipment ordered at the pre-increase prices as above would be sold on at pre-increase prices so as they had only just sent in an order, their web prices were correct and do not reflect the CANON or NIKON price hike - and will not do so until they place another order with their suppliers.

Think of that what you will but while resellers like Warehouse Express are already selling at increased prices, (maybe because they have already sold stock yet to arrive at the old prices), it may be worth looking at the Cornwall site if you are after any new kit at the moment. I have checked out a few items and prices are indeed lower there than anywhere else as far as I can see. Lower than the HK / Taiwan EBay sellers too!

One last point - I ordered a WhiBal product from the USA a couple of weeks ago - something like $40 including postage. When it arrived, Royal Mail charged me an extra £11. It seems that anything worth under £18 is ignored in terms of VAT but over £18 and you pay VAT plus a Post Office handling fee of £8!!! So I wasn't best pleased although the WhiBal does what it says it does on the tin! ( http://whibalhost.com/_Tutorials/WhiBal/02/index.html ). I mention this as there are no real guarantees these days that there will be no VAT or import duty on goods coming in from outside the EU - many of the HK / Taiwan EBay sellers used to say that you would not pay any VAT on goods sent by them - don't think they are so confident any more!

That's because you don't have to pay any duty or vat if it's value is under £18 by law.

Thanks for the heads up but for me The Nikon bits I am after are still cheaper elswhere - the SB600 is £200 on there, but £175 on amazon, the 70 - 300 VR that I bought for £300 (now £340 at Park) is £370 not a bargain, and even worse if it goes up!

Looks like they have wasted no time putting their prices up also, for example they want £879 for the the Canon 24-105 when it can be had for £679 .

Or their prices were high to start with.

Just checked back and yes! Some prices have gone up from this morning but some remain as they were - CANON 1D MKIII is still at £2,500 compared to WEX who have it at £3056 - not good times really .... but I guess this is not news these days.

Cracking site slideordie - wish I had seen that one before today, would have taken a lot of pain out the last few days - thank you - got it bookmarked for the future.

My experiences over the last week or so though is that stock levels are quite low especially for the pro gear.

The price hikes have caught a lot of people off guard - I PM'd Ian Kerso for a quote on a couple of Nikon lenses, and his reply was that he's just not competitive on Nikon in the current climate.

Hoard those lenses people!

Should still be okay with Canon.

Specialist shops like WHE or Calumet have a higher rate of turn over, so they are having to replace the lenses at the newer, increased price sooner. Soon the likes of Amazon and Comet will be buying more stock in and having to put their prices up too - but they may have to put them up by nearly 50% if Canon plan on adding another 10-20% across the board.

Also a lot of people are basing their 2nd hand prices on new prices - asking as much or more than they initially paid 3 or 4 years ago!

Tell me about it.
I found this with the Canon EF-S10-22mm on ebay.
Some people are prepared to pay over the top imho.
I've even seen Sigma 10-20's that are over a year old go for £25 less than the current cheapest UK price.
I decided to buy a new 10-22 today before the current stock was exhausted.
After seeing warehouse express latest price I realised I had to act quickly.

Yes, I mentioned on another thread that I have got sick of ordering items only to receive an email telling me they are out of stock.

Must pay credit to Park Cameras. That happened with them, but their email offered immediate order cancellation.
Not all suppliers do that and CC companies say they don't need to.

And yes, prices are flying up.
