Canon at Focus on Imaging

You've clearly never worked for a big corporate! Logic and sense go out of the window!

There will be some sort of silly thing like they have an exhibition, overtime or travel ban in place and despite the outlay already committed, the vastly smaller figure cannot be spent because it make break someone's budget.

A budget allocation isn't spent until its spent and can be pulled at any time in my experience! Usually to meet some high up's year end bonus target...
 
Will it really hurt them that badly?? I mean, 35 thousand people out of a population of 50 million go, yes they are all interested in the products, but not all use canon. Will it make you change to another brand because theyare not at the show?
 
chances are they booked and paid for it already, so well done Canon, facepalm of the day.
 
Panasonic have taken the stand.
Doubt it will hit Canon to be honest, they are more interested in there own show in London.
 
Its got to be the most over rated event of the whole year.

'xactly.

It ain't Canon that will be "hurt" by this. It's Focus.

For a couple of years they didn't go and some people found that bad and lots of people said they didn't go because of it. Now they pull out "at the last minute" and a bunch of people who planned to go are going to be annoyed and vocal about it (I bet DPR is recruiting an angry mob right now) and even though it was (probably) Canon's decision - much of the anger will be directed at Focus. It's the only proper camera show in the UK - and the number 2 company won't be there.

I suspect the real reason for this is very mundane and political - but that won't stop the rumours :)
 
Don't worry about it, it's still worth going because Lencarta will be there, on stand F32

More seriously, I'm not altogether surprised. Canon is basically an office equipment supplier, with the photographic side amounting to less than 1 string on their fiddle, so I expect that the marketing decisions are made by the people who sell expensive photocopiers, not by the people who sell cameras...

This is what happens in large companies, and given the cost of exhibitions in the UK I suppose we should all be surprised that so many do go, not that Canon and at least one other won't be there this year.
 
It's obviously a shame for Focus, though Canon must have felt their own show in London suits their target audience better.
Personally the last thing I go to focus for is to look at camera stuff, I'd go to my nearest pro dealer for that. I go to see all the stuff I can't see anywhere else under one roof.

I can't see it hitting canon too badly, hell, they have their OWN trade show lol. However, if panasonic do it right, it could be a nice little coup for them tbh...

A suprise, but i cant say i am hugely dissapointed.
Theres still plenty to check out, and to be honest, we werent looking into any of Canons NEW products anyway.
We are looking at lens buying, but know exactly what we want, so we'll be looking for best price from retailers at the show.
Were more interested in other Retailers products at the show really.

The thing is, by now the costs have probably been paid - except for the setup and running of the stand itself. It's potentially a small blow to their reputation, and a large blow to the Focus organisers [who, I'm sure, will be consulting legal advice as to their position.]

I feel the official statement will be full of rhetoric and posturing, without actually telling anyone the real reasons behind this move.

Well, only insofar as to make sure that the space was paid for - Canon not actually being there I suspect is no more under their control than anyone else not showing.

I doubt they could hold them liable for "loss of prestige".

Its not Formula 1 with guaranteed appearance contracts :D

Realistically though, what would Canon being there change? There'll be plenty of stands for you to gawp at nice gear etc.

I pretty much never spend much time at the 'Big Boys' stands as there's never anything there that the retailers can't show you.
 
It's nice to unashamedly fondle those gazillion mm lenses though :D

Take a look at an Apple Store - actively encouraging people to get hands on with your kit is a win.
 
I should imagine the biggest loss is in the form of goodwill. As has been said, probably 95% of costs are already paid (well, invoiced at least - big companies rarely pay promptly).

In return for that 5% saving they frustrate thousands of current and potential future customers, and plant the seed of doubts in people's minds as to Canon's dedication to this part of their business.

Interesting to see what the "official" reason is.

There are a couple of guys/pervs from the local camera club who are going primarily for that reason.

Spot on, that's why they probably aren't going. The costs probably don't cover the increase in brand awareness and sales. Wonder how many people who play with the 1d and 600 F4 actually then go out and buy one?
 
It's hilarious - the amount of people you see wandering around with a 70-200/2.8 strapped to their bodies for an INDOOR TRADE SHOW.

Watching them dribble over the models is pretty grim.

Bit sad to read things like this as the model shoots are a minuscule part of the show. There are lots of trade stands where you can ask questions of people in the know about things like lighting, printing etc as well as the opportunity to chat to people from organisation like BIPP, RPS, SWPP etc.

they are a miniscule part of the show, but (purely anecdotal) every time I've been there they do seem to have an awful lot of dribbling blokes with 70-200's round their necks hanging round. So much so its a bit of a fight to get past
