Canon battery grips

I have been looking at different battery grips for my 50d.

i have seen the canon version and other ones on ebay etc.

do the different types offer any more functions at all? i have seen some that have a lcd on the back as well.

any info welcome

to be honest the more options = the more things to go wrong and with Chines/japanese support its gonig to be a night mare getting them fixed.

I just went with a 3rd party Phottix grip of ebay. No extra functions. Has worked fine. Got the original grip on the 5DII and to be honest asthetically there isn't muh in it.

i remember reading something like this as well, but couldnt remember 100%

do the cheap ones come with metal gears?
