Beginner Canon comparison?

All,

New to the forum so please go easy :) I've been shooting for about 7 years with a canon 7d mk1 but feel like it's time for a change ? What's the general consensus on the 5dmk2? Is it so much better than the 7d? Ideally I'd like the 5dmk3 but I've just had a little girl (6months) so money is fairly tight to be splashing £2,000 on a body.

Kit wise I have a 24-70 2.8L and s 70-200 f4 L and the canon 50mm 1.4

Would selling the 7d for a second hand 5d mk2 be a better option?

Many thanks in advance.

It depends entirely what you want to shoot, they are very different bodies. The 7d is geared up for sports, but the 5d mk2 has a full frame sensor and slower AF / FPS etc so is more suited to landscapes and portraits (though is still very capable of shooting moving objects). The 5d2 is quite old though, but still very good.

Hello JBradderz and welcome to TP.

The question is why does it feel like it is time for a change? Nothing wrong with wanting something new/different but what is it about the 7D that you feel is holding you back and would be corrected/alleviated by getting a new body?

Dave

Thanks for the replies,

It's a strange one really as I don't have any particular style in what I want to shoot, I'd say predominantly landscape as I do a lot of overnight fishing / camping so I like to capture wildlife, the scenery that sort of thing,

I have used the continuous shutter speed of the 7d a few times but I wouldn't say it's a deal breaker in a new body.

And although the mk2 is old now I just think having a full frame will help,

The reason for change is that I don't feel my 7d is getting me as sharp images from the glass I own as I would like and feel that a full frame 5dmk2 would do. The 7d doesn't hold me back as I love the camera I'm just after sharper cleaner crisp images and I don't feel the 7d is giving me the quality I'm looking for. I've had a few looks on dxomark and that seems to show the quality of image doubles on a 5dmk2 than that on my7d with the glass I own I just wanted to know what other people's views were ?

Had both and preferred the photos from the 5dmkii, admittedly I didn't shoot any action type stuff. Bear in mind you will lose the 1.6x cropped field of view effect the smaller sensor gives, might matter to you for some aspects such as small wildlife.

What is your budget? The reason I ask is that you can pick up slightly less than perfect used 5D3's for around £1400, and new grey ones for under £1600. Also, in a couple of days when the 5D4 comes out I would imagine there'll be a few more used 5D3's to choose from.

I think you'd find the 5d2 a much better bet for general/landscape photography than a 7d. Quality will be better in many ways but watch out for the change from crop to FF format as advised above.

On your 7d the lenses you own are acting as 80mm (50), 38-112mm (24-70), and 112 - 320mm (70-200). On the 5d they will be back to the figures in brackets so that can make a big difference.

I Agree that a 5d3 migh be a better bet 2nd-hand, grey market or some time after the 5d4 becomes available. The 5d3 is a stunning camera body.

Don't fancy the 6D then? I'd be considering that against the 5Dii as you can get either for about the same money.

All your lenses are full frame the extra low light ability will come in hand shooting the baby indoors, do it! :)

Much better sensor with the 6d.

Same money or a little more then the 6d is a no brained of you don't mind the lack of joystick etc.

Back on topic OP given your recent arrival I would say a full frame body is a worthy upgrade and will let you get the best out of all your lenses!

Although I'm on the darkside ;) I went from a crop body to a full frame. At first it's like night and the day the difference. Yes the reach can be an issue but you soon find ways to overcome this.
If you have the funds the do it I would say

Another vote for the 6d. I'd only recommend the 5dII to anyone who already owned one and could take advantage of identical bodies. The 6d is better in a couple of ways and equal in most others.

I'd also recommend the 6d. Also what is your budget? You say you can't afford £2k but what about a end hand 5diii? Mine cost me around £1,100 so much less than £2k.

I used to have both but sold the 7D and most of my Canon lenses to fund a move to Fuji.
I kept the 5D and a couple of specialist lenses, if you don.t need the AF and frame rate of the 7D then go FF.
I cannot comment on the 6D never having used one but there is nothing wrong with the 5D Mk2 , just depends if you want the later model
