canon compatible flash

The 35mm film models (EZ) only operate in manual mode on a Canon DSLR.

I use a Canon 550EX on an EOS 40D, everything works except a few settings in the camera menu, these can be set using the flash menu, works well.

The Manual mode of the flash.
The setting of the camera shouldn't make too much of a difference.
There will be no automatic metering though I suspect.

I've got an old 300EZ flash and only barely integrates with the digital - it's safe to use, voltage is low enough, but flash is full strength in any of the camera modes (P A S M) - it does pick up the lens setting 35mm-50mm-70mm etc but that's about it. Presumably the higher up flash models which have their own level controls would be useable by setting flash output on the flash rather than in the camera?

It certainly doesn't seem to make any effort in terms of auto metering, if the number of blown out shot's i've had is anything to go by
