:cuckoo: Hello all, have a canon 5d mk 2 with L lenes. am considering a 2X converter,(canon) has anyone used a converter with L lenses and what resultes did you get.

Firstly I'm not sure that any of your lenses will accept any kind of Canon extender.

Secondly, with your camera body you could only put on a 1.4X converter if you wish to retain autofocus.

Canon have this nifty little "trick" that means if you try to put a converter on a non-1 series body that puts the widest aperture at over 5.6 you can only manually focus.

This is because putting any kind of teleconverter on means you lose a stop of light, with a 1.4X it's 1 stop and with 2x it's 2 stops.

I hope I'm not telling you stuff you already know and that this makes sense as I should really be asleep:)

Beat me to it Lawrence and agree I should be having a kip too, bloody steroids

Read the other day that new 70-300L doesn't accept a TC, know some people tape up pins to stop it reporting and retain AF to get around the problem you mention above

Only got a 1.4x to use on a 70-200mm f/4, so never faced that problem, also read that the new Canon 1DX has TC and AF issues, can't see that pleasing a fair few potential buyers
 
The 70-300L doesn't physically fit canon TC's at all
 
Many thanks for the input,I think the money would be better put to a new lens than risk getting poor results. Good link, very interesting reading.
 
70/200 f4 L works well on a 5d with a 1.4 converter, you'd be hard pushed to know you had one on the lens at all. A mk2 is worth the money, mk3 probably not, too expensive.
