Canon custom functions

Should I set the canon camera custom fuction to cf8 for the noise reduction. Does it make any difference. Has any one tested it.

It's normally used for long exposures but bear in mind if you take a 30s exposure it then takes another 30s to write to the card

It does help, but saying that, I generally don't bother with the 5D. I find it handles short long exposures (if that makes any sense) more than well enough. And anything properly long, I don't want to kill my batteries, or wait around that long for it to do the dark frame.
