Canon D60 0r EOS 10D?

Hi everybody,

First post!

I'm looking to buy my first DSLR camera.
I was thinking either the Canon D60 or EOS 10D. I know the EOS 10D seems to be the better one, but is there a significant difference in picture quality between the two?

Lastly any opinions on the Nikon coolpix 5700?

First the typical advice, go to jessops or whereever and try it out and see which feels best. Also look into which brand gives the type of lenses you feel you'll want.

I've just gone through the dilemna of deciding to switch to canon from my nikon d40 because of my frustration of having to buy AF-S lenses and if you get the D60 then you will have to too. My advice is if you decide to go Nikon, maybe go the next model up so you don't get caught in the same trap I did. It's not quite as bad as I've made out but still, something to consider.

Good luck. As for image quality, I think they're all the same really, it's how you use it that matters.
 
I'm not suure, but I have a feeling the 10D does not take EFS lenses - if so a 20D (about £200) might be a better bet if you are looking at EFS lenses.

If only EF lenses should be ok

I'm going to be the first pedant and point out the D60 is a Nikon. But definitely go and have a feel, lots of people choose their first DSLR based on the feel of the body. Both cameras will do a great job for you though.
 
Also, have a look at Flickr and do a search to see the sort of shots each camera is capable of, put in the kit lens (whatever each one comes with) as a keyword as well, eg 'Nikon D60 18-55mm' so you can get a feel for what it can do.

I think he was refering to the Canon EOS D60.

Canon D30,D60,10D,20D,30D,40D,50D

Was a long time ago though (in digi SLR years anyway)

I second that. 20D is a better camera in every way and only a small step down from the 30D, which was ultra-reliable. Bet you could get a 20D for no money these days :)
 
D60 is dis-continued so if you want one, get one whilst stocks last!
 
10d out of the 2 but do try and get to handle one before you commit as they are big and heavy, even more than the current XXd range and quite a bit more than the consumer ranges.

aside from that they are great, as mentioned EF fit only, if that is a problem to you try and up you budget(what is you budget BTW) to a 20d and aswell as then being able to use EF-S lens you will get twice the shutter speed and a slightly higher pixel count..

No. Budget is irrelevent to the question, which is about two different Canon models.

I would always choose the 10D. The megapixels between the two are the same but the 10D was the first "main stream" DSLR from Canon (its the camera that made me go digital and I took about 40,000 shots on a pair of them)

AF is better, menus are better. The 10D is a cracking camera and will be a good value option.

The other option to consider - I don't know if it is cheaper or not - is the 300D, that was the 10D sensor in a cheaper body... Slower frame rate and AF but it depends on what you shoot if that is important or not...

I must be losing the plot? The OP said Canon D60... is the D60 not Nikon, or did Canon do a D60 too??

No Canon had the D60 before Nikon I know because I had one,anyhow I think you will find the 10D a much nicer camera to use and from what I remember it was a step up in quality over the Canon D60,as long as you are happy to acept that the speed of AF is not up to a modern prosumer DSLR and the fact that the noise above 800ASA is poor then you will get some great results.
Dont know if it has to be Canon because I have always heard very good comments about the Nikon D70 and D70s you may want to look at these as well

I have been looking into the Canon EOS 20D. You seem to regard this camera highly...Much more so in comparison to the D60 or 10D.
I'm totally amateur when it comes to photography, but i am looking for a quality camera that will put me in good stead for the future and one that is upgradeable in terms of lenses etc.

On another note i'm also thinking of buying a Nikon 5700 as a cheap backup. Is this a good choice?

Hi again...

Truth is i can't afford for than £250.00 right now. The DSLR's i have mentioned seem to be in this price range.
From looking at various reviews etc it seems the one to go for is the Canon EOS 20D, unless someone can tell me otherwise?

To be honest i'm more confused than ever!
 
If you get lucky you could probably find a 30D for around £250-£300, D60 and 10D/20D are a bit old.

At the time it was good - now it's total pants..... Got one in the office - can take a tea break in the time it takes to focus :)

But seriously though...the 30D seems to be out of my price range...

No one has commented on the Nikon 5700...I was thinking of buying one as a backup...But strumstrum mentioned the Panasonic FZ20...In addition i have heard good things about the Sony DSC-F717...

Any opinions on which one of these i should go for? My main concern (like everyone else!) is Image quality...
 
Been using a 10d for over six years now, and never let me down yet. I have been tempted on many occasions to upgrade to a newer model, but I will be sorry when the day comes and I part with it. If you are fairly new to Digital Slr's, then you will probably find that the 10d has more than enough features, many of which you may never use. Considering the new price of one of these camera's, six years ago, was over £1300, I would consider today's second price to be an excellent bargain.

That's what i thought...It truly is a bargain...and it seems to tick all the boxes.
How is the image quality?
 
18 months ago I bought a second hand 10d, recently upgraded to a 50d, the 10d is still a fine camera but I'd seriously consider a 20d instead because apart from anything else its start up time is a lot quicker, tbh the 10 is a little slow, and the 20 takes EF-S lenses, which opens up a few more possible options, if your budget can stretch to the 20 that is the one I'd go for. If it wont then you wont be dissapointed with a 10 though and if you sell it you wont lose much money, just bear in mind the 10 may be a lot more 'used', buy on camera condition.

Put the same lens on a 50 or a 10 and you wont notice a great difference unless you expand the image size considerably.
The 10 will be a lot more forgiving of a soft lens than a 30/40/50.

I will echo what Peter says about the 10d still being a more than capable camera, I certainly love mine... but if I was in your shoes with your budget I would get the 20d..

here are some recent shots taken with my 10d w/ nifty 1.8 attached.. I only took Photography up May though so compensate for that..

Wow...Nice photo's strumstrum...

OK, this is a silly question i know...But will a DSLR always give better Image quality than a compact like the Nikon 5700 or the Panasonic that you mentioned?
 
Ignore these comments that are trying to infer that the D60 and 10D went out with the ark and that you should go for a 20 or 30D and use whatever is left for a lens,the old adage that good glass makes good photographs still holds firm so if you stick a good lens on a 10D and a poor lens on a 20D its the first combi that will give you quality.

If possible get to try out your choices before buying but always look to get the best lens rather than best camera that you can afford

In my opinion is the image quality is really good. Obviously there are other factors to consider, like what lens you are using, and what size of end photo you wish to view. Having said that, I have 30'' x 20'' (inches) prints, that I am very pleased with. I suspect if you took the same picture, using the same lens on a 10d, 20d or even 50d, and viewed them either on an A4 print or a standard monitor you would struggle to tell the difference. This is certainly the opinion I have reached having read many different threads on a similar subject (This is the main reason I have still not parted with my trusty 10d).
