Canon Date Codes?

Should a genuine Canon lens have a UV, UU or UW date code? was considering buying a second-hand lens and have been told that the lens doesn't have one of these codes? should I be concerned. TIA

Some cheaper lenses and kit lenses tend not to have date codes as far as I'm aware. My 18-55 and the 75-300 I just got rid of didn't have one. I'm sure there aren't any bad intentions behind it, may just be that it really doesn't have one.

There are plenty of non-L's with date codes too. The two non-L TS-E lenses, the MP-E65 and the 100/2.8 macro, to name a few, all have date codes.
