Canon DSLR folder names

Hi,

I have just gone over the 10,000 photos on my 40d for the first time.

I get the EOS utility to rename files on upload as <camera_id><folder_number><frame_number>

This worked great for the last card that actually had the transition over the 10,000 threshold. However, whenever I reformat the card, it resets the folder name to 100CANON and hence I start running the risk of over-writing files (if the subject matter happens to be the same next time I hit the frame number).

I know that I can put the card into a card reader and manually create folder 101CANON, but that disappears next time I format the card!

Am I missing a setting, or do I need to have a different file name convention?

Hi Graham

When I save mine, I don't bother with folder number as as far as I'm aware, when you format the card, it wipes everything and sets up from beginging - hence 100 folder name, when you have a certain amount of shots in that folder, it will then create another new folder 101, 102 etc etc - is this the problem you have found ?

Also, do you have the body set to continuous numbering or reset, If it's continuous are you saying that the file number was 9999 and has now reverted back to 0001 ?

Hope this is of some help...

I use a convention of date the pictures were taken and the subject

eg pictures of red kites taken last Friday would be in a folder;

2011 10 28 Red Kites

I'm very unlikely to have more than 9999 images in any folder
