It will work perfectly and is a good choice for wildlife, or perhaps motor / aviation events when it is necessary to quickly change focal length.

It is quite a good lens at the long end, but wants stopping down a little at the short end before it gives it's best. The push-pull zoom is not to everyone's taste and if you are most interested in top performance at the long end then the 400mm f/5.6 prime gives better performance for less, albeit without Image Stabiliser.

If you do not necessarily need a zoom lens than also have a look at the 300mm f4 IS which also works great as a 420mm f5.6 IS lens with the 1.4x TC and offers stabilization unlike the 400mm f5.6.

Also, if you insist on a zoom, then the two Sigmas are great and excellent value for money (had the first one and now I have the 2nd one for my wife): Sigma 120-400mm OS, Sigma 150-500mm OS.

Finally, if you can stretch your budget a bit, the new Sigma 50-500mm OS is supposed to be excellent.

All Sigma lenses above have image stabilization that is supposed to be better than the one in the Canon models above (300mm and 100-400) as it offers 1-2 extra stops (more likely one stop from my tests).

I've got exactly that combination and absolutely love it, most of my shots in the Zoo section from CWP are taken with it, a couple of examples for you...

I'm still learning, I know I'm not pushing the camera and lens to anywhere near it's limits but hope that helps, it's a cracker of a lens so am sure you will enjoy it...

Thanks micloi and Ryan, especially for the examples and advice.

Looks like the Sigma 50-500 is similarly priced to the 100-400 although I'm tempted by my first L purchase.

Cheers
