Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L II & Lee Filters

I've been saving up to purchase a wide angle lens.

The Canon EF 14mm f/2.8L II is the one I like, but I also own some Lee Filters.

Is it possible to use Lee Filters with this lens?

This lens has a gel filter holder which you install before mounting on the camera. As they neeed to be cut to size, perhaps you wouldn't wish to butcher a Lee?

Not really.

I had read about this gel filter & it seemed a bit of an afterthought on Canon's behalf.

It's a bummer really that a wide angle (landscape) lens hasn't got an allowance for proper filters.

To be fair to Canon, they really could not adapt the lens for a filter holder as the front element protrudes so far that any holder would cause severe vignetting.

Filtering the 14/2.8 is a problem. I recently sold mine and replaced it with a Zeiss 15/2.8 which does take front filters (even screw in ones if you prefer).

Intriguing, I looked at the 15mm at Photokina and fancied one, does the built in hood not get in the way?

I use screw-ins (95mm), Mark, but I've seen reports of modified square holders being used. One of the manufacturers (Lee or HiTech) are said to be working on an engineered solution for their products.

It looks like the 14mm may not be for me, as I was hoping somebody on this forum had a workaround. So how does the 16-35mm & the Zeiss 21mm measure up against each other & the 14mm

It's a remarkable achievement to be able to correct such a short focal length and still have a front element that is flat enough to accept screw-in filters.

I can't pass judgement on th 16-35 but the Zeiss 21/2.8 is cerainly at the top of its game. It's a long way from 14mm though, a very different beast indeed.
