Canon EF 17-40 & EF-S 10-22 Lens - replacement lens hood.

I've been using the EF 17-40 F4L lens for a while.
Because I sometimes shoot under low-light conditions I recently upgraded to the EF 16-35 F4L IS to take advantage of the image stabiliser.
I've always felt the EW-83E lens hood supplied with the 17-40 was unecessarily bulky.
The 16-35 comes with a new design EW-82 hood, which features a release button which locks rotation when the hood is mounted, and is much less bulky than the old EW-83E hood, despite needing to shield a slightly wider angle of view.
I also use the old EW-83E hood on my EF-S 10-22 lens when I'm shooting APS-C.
I was thinking of replacing the old EW-83E hood on my EF-S lens with the newer EW-82 hood, but when I tried the EW-82 it would not fit onto the EF-S 10-22 lens. The barrel of the EF-S 10-22 seems to be a fraction larger diameter than the barrel of the EF 16-35, so the hood will not slip over the front of the lens.
I've tried the new EW-82 on the 17-40 and it fits, although its very tight tight and hard to remove and the lock button doesn't appear to work.

Has anyone managed to fit the new EW-82 hood onto the EF-S 10-22 lens?

I'd be quite willing to attack a "pattern" hood with a file if knew I could make it fit, although I've found the quality of the non-Canon replacements is very variable.
I don't think I'd be happy modifying one of the "more expensive than gold" Canon originals.

The OEM hoods are generally designed for specific lenses and characteristics. The EW82 is designed specifically for the 16-35 f/4 I believe.

The 16-35 F4L is supplied with the EW82 hood.
I was struck by how much smaller it was compared to the EW-83E, and since its coverage was the same, I was curious if it could be adapted to fit the EF-S 10-22, which doesn't come with a hood.
What I didn't realise was the 82 and 83 part of the number related to the diameter of the lens barrel, (sort of obvious when you think about it!) hence the EW82 being "tight" on the 10-22 lens, although I did manage to fit it onto the 17-40.
I'm going to sell the 17-40 (with the EW-83E hood), but I still need a hood for the 10-22 and I hate the EW-83E, since it seems unnecessarily bulky, especially when compared to the EW82.

I wouldn't mind having a go at adapting an aftermarket EW82 if it's possible, but I wouldn't want to touch one of the ultra-expensive Canon originals.

Careful with third party hoods, especially from eBay. Some of the cheap ones are made from very weak plastic which can crack and offer little protection if dropped as they can't take the weight of the body / lens.

Yes - thanks for the warning.

I have already had experience of aftermarket replica hoods and I'm aware of their variable qualities.
Of course, once you start hacking away at one, it's a bit late to ask for a refund!
I bought a cheap aftermarket example for my EF-S 15-85 lens. It was advertised as having a matt interior, but when it arrived it was shiny inside and out.
When I complained that it was not as advertised, they (an Amazon merchant) gave me a full refund and told me to keep it, so it shows how much some of these things are really worth.
I paid a little more and got a much better version with a flocked lining.
