Canon EF 17-40 mm f/4.0 L USM Lens

Hi Guys,

Looking at buying a Canon EF 17-40 mm f/4.0 L USM Lens as stated above, I only have a Canon 1100D (I realise it is a crop and not fussed about the wideness that is lost, just want the quality of the L)

Is it worth a buy for these reasons? Using it for automotive photography (I mostly do static shoots, but have a 75-300 for longer range panning shots)

I looked at these when I was in the market for a lens of that length and got told that that particular lens does not really like crop cameras and the 17-55 f2.8 was the better option.

I went down the 17-55 route and its a blinding lens.
 
Don't get too hung up on having to use L glass. If it's wide you want then the canon 10-22mm gets consistently high reviews but can't carry the L tag as it's ef-s.

Only consider the 17-40 if it's really the focal length you'll use - even then there's the canon 17-55 f2.8 or the value for money tamron 17-50 f2.8 to consider.
 
Not particularly wide its more the quality of photo I want. Will the 17-40 L fit on the 1100D?
 
TBH, the EF-S 15-85 is a better lens for a crop camera. The optics are as near as makes no odds as good as L glass and build quality is not far behind. I use a 17-40 on my 5D2, but my standard lens for my 7D is always the 15-85. I can't ever remember using the 17-40 on the 7D.
 
Ah okay, To be fair the 17-40 is the sort of focal length I would be interested in. Looked at the 10-22 but for me that seems a touch too wide
 
Saying that, just had a look on google at the 10-22 and there is some corkers on there!

Just had a look, I have the obvious 18-55 Kit lens that comes with the 1100D... I'm guessing the 17-55 is no comparison and may as well part ex the kit lens in against it? even though I'll get about 30 quid lol
