Thinking about one of these to replace my Sigma 17-35mm f2.8-4.0 EX DG.

I don't need the extra 'reach' of the Sigma now that i have a 24-105mm f4 L and a Full Frame sensor, and doubt i need to go below 20mm focal length in the future.

I've always thought the Sigma to be an OK lens image wise, nothing earth shattering, but reasonably capable.

Any views on improvements i'll see in IQ, CA and vignetting ??

To be used for in city architecture (narrowish streets etc), landscape and car close ups.

Thanks for the links guys - its the age of the design that concerns me a little, but then again if it ain't broke ...

EdBray - nice w i d e images - perhaps its my screen, or the web compression but IQ doesn't seem that sharp in some of those. I will do a bit more research on this lens though i think its a bit on the slow side at f4.5-5.6 - thanks.

I was just showing how much more is available below 20mm. 12mm isn't for everyone, but there is a long way between that and 20mm on FF.

Phil - thanks for those - must admit i was starting to lean towards a 17-40mm or a used 16-35 L, but i'd have to forgoe the 50mm f1.8 to f1.4 swap.

I might just have a day shooting with the Sigma to evaluate how much use a wide angle zoom is going to get in my hands, after all its pretty wide on a FF to most people.

FWIW I think adding a 17-40L to your arsenal is going impact (positively) on your photography more than changing 50's!

Hi all

Just to add another option in I have the SIGMA 15-30mm and found it to be a more than capable contender... although has a good bit distortion at times on certain stuff if your trying to get straight lines... its fisheye esque but its not!

Im looking to buy a 24-105 soon as well, (once the wedding is paid for) and I guess then I'll be wandering if I need the 15-30 at all... I'll prob keep it but then the tought of a better fixed prime at 20mm is prob really a better option in terms of quality! Never had a prime for years though since my 50mm on a K1000 so and a bit scared about working with one again.

Well i tried out my Sigma 17-35mm again today, and i was surprised again at the width - its more than i need for sure and the IQ isn't half bad actually. So i thought i'd go looking for some prime glass at my local dealer, plus the local LCE and Jessops...

Managed to try a Canon 50mm f1.4 out, seemed quick, quiet and consistent on AF performance. Same dealer didn't have the Sigma equivalent and neither did LCE or Jessops (both of whom had pretty low stocks of everything !).

I did manage to pick up a used by warranted Canon 24mm f2.8 complete with hood for a good price though. Seems to be a sharp act, be interesting to see how it compares to my 24-105 f4 L. A strange purchase maybe, but a whole lot lighter to cart around on a weekend away.
