credit card has taken some damage this evening.

ordered from warehouse express (as website showed in stock), they emailed me a few minutes later saying that the lens was on back order.... :-(

ordered from cameraworld.co.uk instead. what are these guys like? couldn't see on the site if the lens was in stock or not, but took a punt on it.

anyway, looking at the lens, is it so that the wider you go the more it extends? what's that all about?

but i'm well excited! now to sell some old stuff on ebay :-)

btw, please post some of your best canon ef 24-70 2.8 shots, just to whet my winkle.

yes it does extend at the wide end, use it with the hood on and you won't notice it. I actually like it that way.

I only have one 24-70 f/2.8 photo here is it is attached to my 450D.

I did a side by side once with a siggy 24-70 LOL

goddammit now I want a 35L even more :D
 
The lens extends more when the focal length gets shorter in order to make the hood effective at all focal lengths.

I bought my last 2 lenses from their London store and was very pleased with them, all the staff were really helpful and reserved lenses for me without deposits. If the only part of the company is as good you shouldn't have any problems.

Has it been calibrated by Canon since? One day I will take there mine, if there is any hope. It certainly can be very sharp wide open, 35mm is the best I think. I don't expect prime quality, but maybe something that is ultra sharp by f/4 (not f8) at all settings is reasonable.
 
I have been pleased with my mail orders with Camera World, there website is not always up to date, so it is better to phone them to check if they do have stock.

camera world don't expect to have stock this year. warehouse express didn't know, but likely to be several weeks.

good old park cameras have stock and i'll have it tomorrow!

absolutely great service too.
 
Cuthbert, if that ends up failing too go to calumet, same price and they'll do you next day as well, thats where i got mine two weeks ago.

There is a strong remour of a mk II to be released soon, so Canon may have stopped making the mk I.
 
@joe - thanks for that - i'll add calumet to that list of places i check in future. park cameras did say that i've got the last one and it should be with me tomorrow :-)

@little john - i did ask kerso for a quote for my last lens, he did a great price... but he can only accept certain types of payment - bank transfer, paypal. i'm paying by credit card (got a great interest free deal atm) and i can't use my credit card with paypal. it doesn't let me and paypal were very unhelpful on the phone when i asked them about it. unfortunately balance transfers are not interest free (there is also a 3% fee) so any cash i'd saved on the lens from kerso would have been eaten by fees.

@brachytron - the guy from camera world said that there are major stock problems with canon at the moment due to them shutting down manufacturing capacity during the recession... this seems to be an ongoing problem with canon right now... even when i purchased my 5d2 in may it was out of stock nearly everywhere, and on back order in several places. at the time people speculated that it was because a successor was around the corner... that new camera turned out to be the 60d.

not saying there isn't a new 24-70 imminent, but a couple of places have said they're just struggling to get stock of certain things (think bath cameras was the other place)
 
as promised... lens came today. had a bit of a play.

24mm on a full frame body is pretty wide, wider than i was expecting somehow. you can fit an entire person in at just a couple of feet away from their nose. definitely going to have some fun with this lens. i love the way it stretches out things.

any techies out there... just HOW does it get wider at 24mm when the lens is extended? that messes with my head.

it's heavier than it thought too once it's on the camera. i really need to get down the gym.

It's just the physical design - some of the groups inside will also protrude forward (it's when the groups inside, on average, protrude backwards you extended the focal range) like the 16-35 which does the same thing. This is important as it means the hood is optimised for both wide and extended. Providing sufficient coverage whilst not causing vignetting (as you need a shallower hood the wider the lens is)
