just rumour mills that i have heard with possible inclusion of an IS model. however its jsut that, rumours and probably more of what people want rather than based on facts!
Its still a great lens that has great IQ, i cant see there being too much of a change apart from the price if a new one is realesed. However the 70-200 mkII has shown a big step in image quality so again you never can know for sure.
even if one was released tomorrow i would wait for a good set of consitent review before i would invest in one.

Its still a while off, keep in mind the earthquake probably pushing new releases further and some of the lenses announced last year still haven't hit stores. My guess is it'll be at least 2012 before you can buy a 24-70 II (and thats assuming its ready to go now). The only expo on the calendar is photoplus really, in October. The Canon Expo in shanghai was only a few days ago and no new announcements there. Not sure if there is anything else Canon would announce a new lens at? Olympics soon so if they have something they want to release for that then it'd probably come before a 24-70 as well (tho they refreshed most of the great whites recently)
Also worth keeping in mind if you want to wait, the 70-200 II was a large step up in price (30% more?). Personally i'd pick up a 2nd hand 24-70 now and then when the next version appears you shouldn't lose too much on resale value and will have been able to make that lens pay for its upgrade (hopefully)

It would be nice to get something improved, as the current one is well behind 70-200mm quality.

It will come one day, but I won't just bet money that it will happen very soon, after all backlogs and new big white lenses still not hitting the shops. 17-40 and 16-35 could also do with some upgrade.

... and remember that 90% of the rumours are rubbish. There are loads of people out there who say they would like a 24-70mm f/2.8 with IS (at least until they find out the price!), but an awful lot of what you see is just the product of wishful thinking.
Fact: Nearly every new lens which Canon and Nikon have introduced in the last 3 years was not predicted by the rumours sites.
