Looking for a walk about, realise there are compromises with both but which lens will give the sharper picture.

CANON EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM ZOOM LENS 28-135 mm

OR

CANON EF-S 18-135mm 3.5-5.6 IS

28-135 advantages - USM

18 - 135 advantages - newer & better IS, EF S so longer reach using 550D

Shopping around there is little difference in the price so will go for the 18 - 135 unless any one can advise me differently.Just to make it clear I am def at the bottom of the learning curve.:) Thanks

Just because its an EF-S lens wont give you longer reach than a non EF-S, its the crop factor which appears to give you longer reach, if the max length of each lens is 135 the angle of view (apparent image size) will be the same.
18-135 will give you more width though than the 28-135.
I have a 28-135 its an ok lens, not my sharpest but the one which sits on my camera all the time.

I am def at the bottom of the learning curve. Thanks for confirming that:)

Just googled and see the difference is in the camera mount.

There is no difference mount wise between EF and EF-S lenses.

Both can be used on a 1.6 crop camera but EF-S lenses must not be used on FF or 1.3 crop cameras because the back of the lens protrudes further into the camera and the mirror will hit it as it comes up.

There is a slight difference in mounts as you cannot phyiscally mount an EF-S lens onto a non EF-S equipped body.

I tested both when I was looking for a general purpose lens.

The 18-135 IS is sharper and has the ability to go wide as I found the 28-135 wasn't wide enough.
