Canon EF 28mm f1.8 @ 1.8

Hi all,

I am just wondering if anyone could shed any light on the performance of the above lens wide open, versus the EF 50mm 1.8 wide open.

I keep reading reviews saying its soft wide open, but is its softness at 1.8 similar to the 50mm at 1.8? I ask because although the 50mm isn't at it's best wide open, I would still class it as very useable!

Can anyone confirm?

It is a bit soft wide open. I was going to get one but found it too soft at 1.8. I would say the 50mm is slightly better at 1.8.
 
I'd agree, quite soft. It's still my lens of choice for night/dull indoors shots though as a soft shot is better than a blurred one. I see you have a 5d mk2 though, do you really need the 1.8 with the ISO performance? Or the 28mm for that matter. What are you planning to use it for?
 
Hi, tbh its more for my 40D as a general lens, equivalent to roughly 50mm. The fact it fits my 5D2 is a bonus.
Ideally I want the Sigma 30mm f1.4 but for the times Id want it on my 5D2 (albeit, not very often, but still) I dont know if I could live with the vignetting and black corners! Its amazing that a DC lens fits full frame, but the vignetting is pretty bad!

So I figured the EF 28mm 1.8 was a good middle ground.
