Depends on the wildlife and how close you can get, 300mm is a bit short for birds 400mm considered to be the minimum with 500 being preferable, and you can then add TC's on top of that. For Motorsport 300mm may be OK depending again on your position relative to the action, rallying where you can sometimes be close a 70-200 f2.8 would be a better choice.

Do you currently have a telephoto lens?
Unless you know 300mm F4 or 420mm F5.6 are focal lengths you will use I would advise caution about buying an expensive lens in that range.
The 100-400mm might be a better option as it is more versitile - although a stop slower.

I sold my 100-400 for a 300/4 IS. I decided to get this as the wildlife pics I go for are bugs, dragonflies, butterflies etc. The IS was a requirement for me. I know that I always used my 100-400 at 400mm, so was torn between the 400/5.6 and the 300/4 IS. The real clincher for me between these was the minimum focusing distance. It is really quite far on the 400mm, which would not have suited my particular wildlife needs.
So, I can add the 1.4x to get 420mm. It does slow down the AF a tad, but I can live with that. I also use extension tubes at times, so I can get even closer to the bugs. I never regret changing the 100-400 for the 300mm.

I've one and really like it and couldn't recommend it enough.
Not sure if it's long enough for birding on it's own, but I believe it works well with a 1.4TC.
I use mine for Aircraft and some motorsport and get great results with it.
I couldn't decide between the 300 and the 100-400 when I bought it, but I'm glad I went for the 300
