Martin ,my first thanks to you tis your thread and when this thing gets here if it's ok I'll share some results try and add for you ( but take into account who is holding said camera I am no expert!! )
Martin in the wildlife section somewhere lurking is a thread about hares (mine we might have spoken there),that basically will be a yard stick for a Canon ef 300 f3.8is (MARK ONE VERSION NOT TWO) against what will come next with a 400DO is MARK TWO) in the hands of a tog learning the ropes. It will be updated sometime with the new lens
thank you martin it's horrible waiting !!
Oh forgotton lens ...for me these has always been a draw to these defractive optic lenses the splitting of light and putting back together is all but mysterious all but witch craft..alchemy to loose weight. It's slightly left field Martin and yet the crafftmanship and the science to make it are beguiling. It's silly to say this I should only be thinking of charts and specs, but there is something I can't really articulate here,
This lens even the first incarnate appealed to me on almost a subliminal level, but research said the 300 was a safer bet, this time ,with the latest version.HMMMMMMM.....we'll see

Hi Stu, well I don't think there are many posts on the 400DO mk 2, I've only used it with the 1 Dx mk1 and 2, and it is excellent, but with a mk4?....it doesn't have the latest AF systems available in the later bodies, so I suspect it won't really show it's paces to best effect, however you are future proofing yourself rather than getting a mk1.
Is the 300 2.8 a mk 1 or 2?.....I sold my mk 2 when I got the 400mk 2 as I found I wasn't using the 300...and I'd bought a mk 2 100-400 which with the iso performance of the mk 2 !Dx wasn't a problem to lose a stop (or 2).
I use the 400 DO with a 1.4 x mostly, and it's great.
Are you planning on a body upgrade anytime soon?...if so, go for the mk 2 DO, if not then a good mk 1 DO (and check it before you buy) might just fit the bill.
George.
George you probably will have used the 1Div though,so you might have an expectation regarding AF performance which is was what I was digging for.
George I have bought a mark two version deal is done only waiting now !
Sure I understand it wont be what the next gen of camera or the gen after that, can achieve AF wise but yes slowly future proofings hence latest exts III;s bought earlier. I just can't do it all at once The deal is done, I have sold my 300f2.8is as part of the purchase. I'll up grade the camera when I can ,but glass first and having 3years of support from canon as a guarantee is kinda nice.Richard's (lost) posts really made me think ,it co incided with a really good deal a birthday and oh hell I am working my butt of for this why not get it slightly early and pay no more for the privalage. the 500f4 was my other option but more costly and again that weight
So I guess with my limited abilities we'll see what the old girl can do with a newer lens..The weight a bit more reach and the 1.4 Af being good enough for bif will do me for the moment George lens wise &better IS too, that will help me) But as you say with a 1Dx or later AF speed is going to be wonderful
. I'm earning this the old way mate cold hard physical graft, huge hours. If I can stay alive the camera shouldn't be too far away, but for someone like me learning one new lens first is I suspect going to be no bad thing
thank you for the reply,I've read many of your words,I appreciate your depth of knowledge
cheers
Hi Stu.
Looks like a New Body and Lens, good job Interest rates are LOW.
Regards.
Well I'm slower than a slow thing rich, but yes camera at some stage, but one step at a time mate tis a lot of money I'll earn this one first
Mind . I just can't understand why they don't give negative interest to folks like me
,it's a concept I tried to sell to the shop,I didn't win
,but nothing, no interest on the bit I couldn't find quite yet, is ok huh
Damn good deal mate but this waiting is no fun
thanks all
